After reading this piece by Chuck Taylor over the weekend at Books A Million(current issue of Gun World IIRC), I'm probably going to sell all my other centerfire rifles...he was extolling the virtues of precision small caliber rifles for LE countersniper work and got into hunting: "...and with the 53-grain Barnes TripleShock X-bullet, the .22-250 Remington's performance isn't just satisfactory but excellent.
"I even killed a nice bull elk at a full 400 meters with the Cor-Bon .22-250 53 gr. DPX with a single intentionally aimed shot through the shoulders. The bull took the hit, trembled a bit, swayed for a couple of seconds then collapsed. Subsequent exam showed that the bullet had in fact penetrated both shoulders, leaving a 1 inch exit hole."Then, talking about the Cor-Bon 53 gr. DPX in .223: "...also killed 2 muleys with 1 shot each at 300 yards with similar effect." So my Remington 788 .22/250 will probably handle all hunting chores outside of big bears and Big Five; probably hang onto my .270 Mountain Rifle for that big stuff... Talk amongst yourselves...

Tom, It's late, it's been a long day, and we need some enjoyment. Wonder how many posts it will take Steely to name that broad?

Old Elmer must be rolling over in his grave.:) I dunno, that sounds like about the same wound channel Elmer got on antelope with .338/.378 KT and 275 gr. Speers. Eat right up to the bullet hole...

4 some reason or another I know of some elk that volunteered to play catch with Swifts and '250's and they all died. I'd say how I know about this but the thread might go downhill from there...grin

Seems strange to me also, but the late, great PO Ackley was a proponent of 22cal at ultra speeds for big game. Dare I doubt the Father of All things AI?

I dare not doubt "thee expert", but I dare doubt the world wide hunting public and repeat my opinion: Just because somthing worked a few times in the skilled hands of one knowledgeable enough to pick favorable conditions, we must not start recommending it for the hunting armys, parts of which will for sure manage to turn things around.
This gets just boring.

Dober When we are talking about Elmer spinning in his grave and the "father of all things AI ", plus the fact nothing but a .338 will even wound them, I think its already picking up momentum on the downhill side... Ingwe

With his lathe turned copper bullets, he killed all sorts of big animals with high speed 22 casl bullets. Mono metal bullets are not new, they are only new in the fact that they are just recently being offered by major bullet manufacturers

I doubt a 53gr TSX would go through both shoulders of an elk,I certainly wouldn't take 1 elk hunting.

Had one stop after going through both shoulders of a big mule deer buck...the skin barely got it stopped, but it stopped nonetheless.Worked like a charm on the deer though..... Ingwe

Who shoots elk at 400 meters? I mean maybe 400 yards but 400 meters?
Anyway. You never hear anyone who shoots stuff like that talk about wind drift. I haven't broke out my tables this morning but I'm guessing at 400 yards (meters lol) that wind drift in that bullet is pretty significant...especially compared to some heavier more traditional elk bullets.

Jwp,
Actually, I can't ever remember P.O. Ackley writing about killing a single head of big game. His book is full of stories by other people about shooting big game, sometimes with his bullets, and he mentions his bullets, but there isn't anything by P.O. himself about his hunting experiences. This has always puzzled me and I was just wondering if you have read any of his stories about actually going out hunting himself.

He wrote about shooting Donkey's if my memory serve with the 220 Swift and Lathe turned copper bullets. He even thought that the Military should go to such a round
