I've got the Ross Gunnison line 1-4, and I can tell you they haven't been made in quite a while. Back in the day, they were nice for a $200-$250 reel. Today, $100 buys a lot more reel. I've got $100 Lamson reels that are nicer, have better drags, and large arbors. The VPS are going for $400 new. I did a quick search and found a used one for $200 so you've got to make your own decision. If your new outfit went $700, I'd try for $400.
Sage FLI rods were $300. They're discontinued, and are selling for $175 at LL. Bean. They also have Ross reels and spools for 30 percent off. The reels are gone but there are piles of extra spools. Say a new outfit would run $550. You could pick up one at Beans new on sale for $350. It's hard to spend big money used when there are deals around for new gear. My friend gave me his 8 weight RPL and I bought my XP at Bean's on sale for $300 ($250 off). Again, you might feel $400 stinks but there are a lot of deals on last years gear, and an old outfit with a Gunnison might not fetch a bunch of money. That's just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Rob is about right. The GUnnison is a great reel and many love them, but the going price for them, still in the box, is only $275 or so to collectors bent on pristine. Used examples go for under 100 on ebay regularly.
The rod is going to be harder because they have come so far with the 4 piece rods. I was a holdout there for way too long. Four-piece rods are now easy to build and do not cost that much more. art

$400 is way over. I would expect to see maybe $100 for the reel and $150 tops for the rod. Top of line used models generally only go for around $250-300.
