Lots of shooters use real Colts, if ya can afford it, go for it.

I am have been having Hamilton Bowen do some work on an original 1901 Colt and also build me a lightweight conversion on a new sixgun and he did not want me to send him a current production Colt as the base sixgun. He simply said that Colt did not have the skilled people to build them like the originals. He firmly stated that USFA was building sixguns that were better than any of the Colt second or third generation guns. I have to say that the 4 3/4" 44 special USFA that I am shooting while the lightweight is being built is fully the equal of my original Colts.

I trust Bowen, make your own choice.

Just for general information on the variations in Colt thumbusters.

The Colt factory and the Colt Collectors Association recognize 3 and 3 only distinct generational categories for Colt SAA's since 1873.

1st gen:1873-1940

2nd gen:1956 with serial #001SA ending in 1975 with serial #73319SA

3rd gen: 1976 starting with serial #80,000 SA..went to split S****A serial numbers in 1993 with serial #S0001A, continuing to the present....

Hope this clears up the continuing seeming confusion over Colt generations....and the thought there is a 4th generation SAA out there.

I used a Colt SAA in competition when I did cowboy shooting.

I nearly sold my USFA a few years back and I have been pleased many times since that I changed my mind. IIR Doug Turnbull recently had some on sale.

I shoot a set of 5 1/2" .44 special Colt's in SASS matches. I had Rugers in .44 mag and liked the feel of the Colt's much better. I did have Ed Janis of Peacemaker Specialties do action jobs on both guns. They are great shooters and have remained reliable after many thousands of rounds downrange. I found a Cimarron repro. Winchester '73 to team up with them. It makes for a great set of shooters.

Sure, LOTS of shooters do! (And I have too)

But I think you'd be just as happy for a whole lot less $$$ if you got a pair of USFA SAAs in either the "fancy" models or the ecconomy "Rodeos".

In fact a pard could hardly go wrong in picking up a set of Longhunter Special USFAs!

I have a few Colt SAAs and some USFA SAAs and USFA makes some beautiful revolvers!

My 2 Cents...

I shoot one Colt and a Gaucho in Cas. I was going to order another Colt but decided to go with the USFA Preminum from Longhunter. It seems as if USFA is using Colt's old plant to make better guns. And at a better price.

Gotta agree with that, they are old style Colt in all but name.
