I'm looking at getting into flyfishing for trout here in E. TN. I've fly fished a bit 10-15 years ago for panfish but never caught the trout bug. We have some really good trout streams in E TN - thought I might partake <g>

I don't want a junk rod but am not ready to spring for a Sage, Scott or Winston either.

I've been looking at TFO, St Croix, and Redington but found Cabelas has their LST for $75 off putting them in my price category.

Anyone have any experience/opinions on the LST's?

I have fished a St. Croix avid for years in several Western states for trout. Fantastic rod for the money. I have fished Sage, Orvis and Scott as well. I thought the Orvis and Scott were better rods, but at 1/2 the cost, my Avid is the next best thing. From boats, to streams to high mountain lakes and big open rivers, it gets it done. 9-5 - the classic CO rod. I have an LST in 7'6" - 2. Great creek rod. I like the Avid better, but LST also get's it done.

I had an LST 5 wt that i used for trout and one day i caught a carp on it and broke it, the good thing is cabelas stands behind their product. Took it back and they replaced it no questions asked. i think they come with a 25 or 30 year warrenty. cant beat it with a stick.

but currently i only own scott rods

for the money the LST is a great rod. Yup, there are others out there that are better but not at that price. For a beginner to intermediate fly caster you'll find the rod very manageable and forgiving.

Thanks fellas!

I'm wanting to try flyfishing for trout - mostly in small-medium streams of E TN. I'm also looking at building a rod - I've built several spinning rods. The cheapest I can do it using a St Croix blank and quality components is ~ $110.00. I think the LST is on a St Croix SCII - same as the St Croix Imperial.

Ebays rods are going for more than 70% the price of a new one.......

Anyone have any better ideas for a begginning rod that sn't junk?

Thanks.

Don't know if it's junk or not but I am learning on an 8 weight Reddington RedFly2 rod with RedFly2 reel package. Local fly shop sold it to me for 200 bucks out the door with hard case, backing, line and leader/tippet all on it.

Hey teal,

I'm following a few on ebay. They are not junk and from what I read a pretty decent setup to learn on. $200 out the door is pretty as well.

Yeah - the local shop has been excellent. I do want to score a 4wgt for our small creek trout. Gonna be hard to pass up that same package in the different weight.

Then again - I would try my hand at making my own but nothing round here as far as classes on that.

Wow!

I just bought a St Croix Legend, 9ft, 5/6 wt, 2 pc flyrod in mint shape. The Legend is the precursor to the current Legend Elite/Ultra. According to St Croix, its equal or better than their current Avid.

$100.00................ cool

I need a reel.
