I am thinking of putting a new stock on my Ruger MKII 77 30/06. I was thinking of the Hogue Overmolded Pillar Bedded stock or the Boyds' Laminate. Is this better than the factory skeleton stock? Any comments on the Hogue or Boyds' stock from people who own/owned one?

I was also looking at the Boyds' Laminate Stocks: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=712044

Thanks

I don't know that either is better, just different if you want change. Both are heavier than I like on a hunting rifle and will increase the weight of your gun.

I did not like the skeleton stock that came on my rifle and did a lot of resarch before I ended up calling Ruger and buying a factory stock from them. It ended up being the most reasonable price. It has been a couple of years, but at the time a factory Synthetic was $85 or Walnut would have been $250. I went with synthetic to save money and weight.

I am very happy with the results. If you do change stocks You will have no trouble selling the old one. I prefer the newer design, but there are a lot of people who like the older stocks.

The factory laminate would be a nicer stock than the Boyds.

The factory synthetic is nicer than the Hogue.

In my experience, I think that Dakota Deer is wrong on both count's
I think any after-market laminate is better than ruger factory, and any synthetic is an up-grade over factory offerings even the Hogue

The Hogue seems to have a love 'em or hate 'em following. I have 3 77's with a Hogue stock and so far like them!

I own 3 Hogues for Rugers and about 5 Boyds Stocks on them... both will be heavier than the factory wood stocks... however I don't look at them as prohibitive... and I like both stocks quite a bit....

when the rain hits, I will usually take the Hogue Stocked rifle out because they grip your hand real well in the Rain...

both are weather impervious....

If someone here has an older MK 2 boat paddle style stock I sure would like to buy it. Please send me a p.m.

Depends on how you'll use the rifle. The skeleton stocks aren't pretty, but they are functional, well balanced, and tough. I carry my '06 quite a bit so I like a light weight stock. You won't get that with either the Boyds or the Hogue. If it were me I'd hold out for a composite like H-S Precision. They are about double what you'd pay for the others, but also 2/3 the weight just as strong, and better balanced. Another consideration on the laminates is that those I've had tend to be slippery when they get wet or bloody.

Thanks guys. I am not overly concerned with weight, I don't carry the gun that much. I had not thought about the laminate slicking up in the rain. I will check out the HS Precisions as well, did not even check with them.

One nice extra is the fact that the Houge stock seems to absorb some recoil also!!!

We end up hunting in the rain here in Oregon... however I have never noticed what I call the Laminate Stocks getting too slick to be a problem....

for the rain tho, you'll notice that the Hogue is like having "stickum" on it...it grips like no tomorrow...like neoprene..

I really like my Boyds thumbhole stock on my Ruger 35 Whelen.

You could probably find an original walnut stock on ebay.

I have a Boyd stock I picked up for a custom rifle I'm, building on an Interarms Mark X action. It has Boyd's "lightening cuts" which remove material in various places to reduce the weight. Don't know what the stock weighs but it feels light in my hands.

I took my factory walnut stock off my 700 BDL and replace it with a Boyds laminated thrumb-hole. I got their fitted and sanded stock and finished it myself. Excellent fit and I can't say that is weighs any more or less than the factory. It sure made a shooter out of this 270.
