I recently bought a 336T in 30-30. I think it dates to around the early 90's. I am not that familiar with level action rifles and I would like to cover a few of the basics.

I believe I am right in thinking that the "half-cock" hammer feature is the only safety on this rifle? At half cock the trigger is locked and it will not fire.

So the way this works is that I load it, and when I chamber the first round, the hammer is automatically at "full-cock". If I intend to fire, I pull the trigger. However, if I want a round in the chamber, but I do not intend to fire, I would carefully lower the hammer to the half-cock position?

Do I have this right?

.

You are correct, but a rifle produced in the early 90's has the cross bolt safety.

Marlin 336T's were made fron 1954-1983.
336DT's in 1962 & 63
336TS from 1984-87
336LTS in 1988 & 89
336LTD in Y2K

A check of your rifle's serial number letter prefix (if any) and/or the first few SN digits will date it as to the exact year.
