will an old style 2-7 compact fit on a leupold 336 1 piece base without extension rings? I cant find max ring spacing specs anyplace for the older VariX models.

Measuring my 26 year old 2x7 I come up with about 5 1/4 inches from the front edge of the front ring to the rear edge of the back one. This will give you about 1/16 inch of clearance at the power ring and at the front bell.

If using an aluminum Weaver type base, I've just hacksawed, dremeled, and filed as required another rear slot forward in the base. Works 4me.

I have used many Leupold 2-7X28 compacts on Marlins before. I am pretty sure I have mounted at least one in a Leupold base and rings with no problems. I know they will work with the newer short Weaver base.
Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

Ive got a 2 to 7 rimfire on my 444 and it works great! The guy at leupold said no problem as they all are tested with the same torture test. Said the paralax might be a problem after 150 yds but haven t had a problem. The 2 7 rimfire is about the samesize as the 2 to 7 compact! Hey to the guy that dremeled a weaver aluminum base, been there done that, a file works good too!! Now ive got a 2 piece weaver steel mount on mine and it works great!!
