It's been a long time since I fired a rifle with iron sights. All of my rifles are topped with optics except for my new AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel.
I got into a discussion the other day with a gentleman about accuracy with iron sights vs a good quality scope. He made some comments that sounded pretty off the wall. Comments like, "if your iron sight groups are larger than your scope groups at 100 yards, than you need to practice more. Scopes make it easier to hit well with less practice, or with bad eyes" Am I missing something here? Is this more Internet BS or is it possible to shoot as well with iron sights as with a good scope at distance of 100+ yards, with a stock rifle and stock sights?

I say he is full of BS or on crack, but I have been wrong before.

Iron sight cover a number of different styles from the shallow vee and large bead front to buckhorn and square notch rear with flat topped and faced front posts all the way through apertures mounted from the bridge to the wrist. Then there are target apertures and they definately can be as accurate as a scope. Then you have to asertain whether he is talking about bench or off hand as it can sometimes be easier to hit with an open sight as there are no magnified wobbless to induce trigger snatch and the let-off can sometimes be smoother.

I think with a peep & good eyes, small groups are possible. I think a scope is a lot better.

I always found it easier to decrease group size by increasing magnification size. So, why the need or desire for scopes with 3x or 4x magnification if the irons will produce the same results?

Why ask a question if you already know the answers?

Wrong again, not a difficult concept to follow, but please accept my apology, lets try again.

There are some people that can shoot open sight VEDDY well indeed. Lots of it depends on what you consider accuracy. If it's just about group size then on average folks can do much better with less practice with a scope, but not all.

If it's about hitting a thang (rock, critter, can etc) with one shot then it's again about the person behind the trigger.

I understand that because some people can't do something that they assume it can't be done, but not to worry you are still SPECIAL in your own way.

How's that?

I've seen a friend shoot a 50 shot 1" group @ 100 yards, with his AR-15 using the 4 shooting positions & 10 were rapid fire. This was with peep sites. Most folks can't do that from a bench with a scoped varmint rifle.
