The Rem SAUM is probably a better ballistic choice, but the 300 WSM is probably easier to find in stores selling ammo. The jury is still out on the 300 Ruger Compact Mag, but it should succeed with time.

I think that a Remington Model 7 in 30 SAUM is an interesting rifle. I think that's what I would go with if, I wanted to try the 30 caliber short action magnums.

I had a 300 WSM that shot bug holes with the first handload I tried in it. However, it didn't like any of the factory ammo that I tried. I vote for the 300 wsm

.300 WSM does not look like it will die anytime soon. Can't say the same about the SAUM. Even if you handload, you still want to have readily available brass and you may want to sell that rifle someday. It would be a hard sell even with a stockpile of brass. My 2 cents.

I haven't shot any of them but I read an article comparing the SAUM to the WSM a while back. The SAUM has better ballistics while the WSM has a higher case capicity. This is possible because they used a special bullet that didn't use up as much of the case capacity. When they compared the two with other premium bullets the WSM outperformed. Don't know if this is obvious, thought I'd thow it out there.

I've had both and currently have a SAUM. They are very similar but I did get a bit more velocity from the WSM - which makes sense since it has a bit more case capacity. I like both and can see a good multi-purpose rifle in either caliber. Useful velocities are 2950/3000 with 180's, 3050/3100 with 165's. To me, that velocity makes it a bit more useful than the good ole 06 - but only in my head. I'm sure there ain't too many critters running around that will notice the extra 150 ft/sec between the WSM/SAUM and the 30-06.
In the end, I really like the short handiness of the SAUM package. For me, the difference in rifle length seems to feel better. I've hunted the WSM/SAUM on a couple of elk hunts and the short handiness and lightweight were welcome. YMMV.
Adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it.
