I have a '98 Toyota Tacoma and have put almost 92,000 miles on it and am thinking I'd better replace the timing chain/belt (whichever it has). Has anyone done this? I have heard this should be done at 60,000, but it's one of those things that are easy to procrastinate. I've also heard of people driving their Toyotas over 200K and never doing this. Any thoughts??

I had toy pu- had 130k and I never touched the timing belt and I am pretty sure I was the first to replace the spark plugs - this at 92k

Timing belt is one of those things where if its broke you don't move. I would replace it. I have never done one but I have found that you can do ANYTHING if you are willing to try it - the worst that happens is you go to dealership- was gonan have to do that anyway if you didn't try.

Its a belt.., I had my done at 75K or so, need to do it again in a few K more. It was ~$250 or so to have it done at the dealer.

I got to looking at it today and talked to a few guys who have done them. It looks easy. So long as I keep everything lined up. I think I will install a new water pump while I'm in there.

What motor do you have in your Tacoma? If it is the 4cyl, it can go a LONG time before the belt needs to be replaced. If it is the 6cyl, you should replace it pronto, otherwise, it gets REALLY pricey if she lets go while the motor is running. Replacing the water pump, hoses and belts is a good idea while it is apart as well....although I have never had to replace a Toyota water pump. I have only owned 15 Toyota pickups. I likey them a bunch. Flinch

Replace it-- Mine let loose at 75K--luckily it was pulling into a parking place at the time.. I replaced it again at 120K just to be sure...The 60K figure is a good guideline to go by.

Ask a dealer or reputable repair shop if your particular motor is an " interferance" type engine. If it is, and you break the timing belt while under way, goodbye valves, pistons and or cylinder head. Bad ju-ju. If it's not an interferance engine it will just quit like you shut her off. Best to replace the belt before any problems
