I just picked up an "old" 5 pound jug of H1000 powder (cheap and available!). It does not specify "Extreme" like the new powder containers. Is the new "Extreme" labled H1000 different than the the old powder I purchased in any way short of the label?

Thanks!

From my comparatively limited experience, one cannot count on Hodgdon powders to be consistent in terms of burn characteristics over time. I do not know whether the issue is with Hodgdon, ADI (who makes all the H rifle powders and even some of the IMRs now), or what. H-1000 is a good example of what I mean if you compare somewhat older data (I'm only talking 5-10 years here) to new data. Charge weight ranges provided by Hodgdon in identical cartridges are significantly different.

That can be said about a lot of powders. We got used to very similar burn rates with the vast lots of military surplus powder after WWII. It ain't the same anymore.

I like H1000 a LOT. It works very well in a number of cartridges. In my own 6.5-06 it's the best powder with 140's, noticeably.

Great powder. My Gordy Gun in 6.5-'06 Ackley LOVES the stuff.

H-1000 is also on my short list, whenever I get off my duff and work with my Remington 700 SPS .257 Weatherby.

H1000 as good as it gets in the 7MM STW with 140 Gr. bullets.

If you want to make a 338 win cook with a 300 gr. Woodleigh then try a big dose of H1000..It will make the 375 H&H hump.

I used H1000 before it became a Hodgdon powder. It is called AR 2217 in Australia and the best sucesses I had with it was in the .300 RUM where it achieved velocities around 100-150fps greater than factory specs in the 2 Remington rifles I worked with back then.

In recent years as a "H" powder, I have not achieved those same velocities but I think (feel) it is more an issue with rifle brand and chamber varience than with the powder itself.

Overall, I think it is a very useful powder for the larger cases with relatively small bores.

If there was ever another manufacturer of H 1000, prior to ADI, athen I am unfamiliar with it.

Don't suppose I'm saying that it's not a good powder (at least in the burn rate my supply came from). It works extremely well under heavy .243s and also for intermediates in my rifle I like to call a .264 WSM, but is more commonly known as 6.5-300 WSM.

However, the bulk burn rate changes to some powders have been dramatically larger than most variations. It's probably just bad luck, but I have been unfortunate enough to see that somewhat more with Hodgdon's non-surplus ADI powders than others (excepting a VV I still have some of).

I don't think it's even slightly unreasonable to demand better consistency from the actual manufacturers of smokeless powder than what we sometimes see. When there's a company who's only a packager/reseller, it opens wider the question of whether that re-seller is specifying the characteristics each powder must have or not, and whether or to what extent a reseller actually tests the powder they're buying. Playing musical suppliers can't help anything, either.

In your opinions is H-1000 considered a a top contender for use in the .300 Win. mag. with 180's ?

I cut my teeth on reloading using H-1000 with a 300 WM. Always was accurate and gave good velocities!

I have a pound of H1000 that has Newly Manufactured on the label and it also says Made in Scotland. I think it's from the eighties.

Hodgdon told me they keep powders within a 2% variation from batch to batch as a specification to ADI.

Having used ADI powders since their inception, I find this tollerance outside my experiences using teh same powders, which has recorded variation up to 6% with some powders.

This is not to say that I have not experienced variation with all powders and brands I have tried, but the subject here is ADI/Hodgdon.

H-1000 is not at it's best in a largecase/smallbore cartridge like the 264WM.Hodgdon data for the 264 shows max grains at less than than cartridge max pressure, unlike 4831. I think they were running into spikes,I know I did.

You would think since a 264 and RUM have have similar bore capacity ratios,a powder that worked in a RUM would work in a 264.It ain't always so.RL-25 is the RUM powder but I found it too heat sensistive for shooting three shot groups in a 264.I'm not alone in that, either.

There is nothing wrong with having two different results. When you review test rifles like I have, it is too common to worry about. Sometimes it gets lost a little in comentary though.

My experence with H-1000 and a 264WM FN was with a short-throated,high friction factory barrel. spikey X 3. I think that combination pushed at the edges.I blew a primer with the starting load.In that same barrel,IMR-7828 was very lineal. I ended up using H-4831 data for that H-1000. Since I have fair bit of questionalbe H-1000,I tried it 6.5x55 starting out with H-4831 data,of course, there it behaved like H-1000 should.

The rifle now has a Douglas barrel with"normal" throat. And really likes Magnum.I can thank greydog for the normal throat.
