I saw one mounted at the local museum standing up... WOW!!! For y'all that live and/or hunt in bear country - I fully understand the need for "big calibers" and "premium bullets." By the way, I'm 6'2", just over 200lbs... I would have been made into "turd" in a few days without a doubt.

Sure wish I could find "the one" during hunting season. With or without premium bullets.

Not doctored up. They grow em big here. They just require time and money, and lots of both.

There is a bear in the lobby of the Best Western in Kodiak that needs to be seen to understand what "Big Bear" really means... That first picture is nothing like it...
The bear in the lobby looks like he would be too big to saddle...

D2D- That ain't "big". Blackies in SE get as big, routinely. Local fella shot a DLP brownie last week with his 454. http://www.peninsulaclarion.com/stories/080709/out_478669517.shtmlI'll bet a pepsi this one is bigger. I had to get out of the stand to kick him in the azz to get him off the bait!

had a brown bear hit a bait station some years back down near the Hope Cutoff. Had a barrel of the old thick wall style... Heavy thing it was. Used really heavy chain to anchor it to a hemlock. Bear spun it on the chain and collapsed the entire barrel! Turned it into a round accordion...

The bear in the lobby looks like he would be too big to saddle... That bear is a lunker. I used to be a near neighbor with the guy who shot him; bear was harvested right at Buskin Lake; thus, only a few miles from town. He is nicely mounted too. not like the overdone snarl on a lot of the mounts you see.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

I hunted the brown bear that is now number 12 on the B&C list. He lived within 500 yards of Coast Guard housing in Kodiak. I never saw him alive, but I could fit my size ten boot inside his back pad track. My friend David Simmerman killed him. I saw the carcass. His chest cavity looked like a VW bug. That's very humbling to romp around the hides of such fantastic beasts.

D2D,
no, that pic was not doctored. That is Phil Shoemaker (posts her as 458Win) on the ladder. He had that pic in an article on size of brown bear in Successfull Hunter (I think it was).
They do grow big.

Looks like a good crowd in the front of the picture. Them bears seem to be wondering about those trespassers in the back.

Here are a couple of pictures of bears taken in Russia (Kamchatka Peninsula, if I recall correctly). Now, before you start in on me: Yes, the bears' feet are not directly on the ground. No, I do not recall the height of the guy, but he does not appear to be a midget to me. No Photoshop trickery that I am aware of, but I can no longer recall where I got the photos. John

John Guys who want to buy a pistol for "bear protection" should study these pictures......and then re-think. BTW, who is the taxidermist?
