Depends on the package but the 25/06 sounds good to me.

I have absolutely no experience hunting goats, but this is the internet so I will venture an opinion. Looking at your gun safe picture, it is clearly apparent you need to buy another rifle for sure. Of course if I were forced to use a caliber from your list it'd be the .257 Rbts or the 25/06, but the up side is your not forced to just stay with the list. On a serious note, I have hunted Alaska and based on that experience I'd chose something that I'd feel comfortable with in a lot of wet weather. I had a standard blue/wood rifle and after two weeks in which I was actually dry a couple of days I spent a couple of hours cleaning the light rust off the underside of the barrel and action. No big deal really, but if I hadn't taken the time while still in Anchorage to mess around with it, that rust would have turned into somthing bad by the time I got home and got "roundtuit". I would agree with w4b ... I'd choose between the .270 / 30-06 / 300 ...........

If i was going on a hunt for Goats it would be the 270 Win.

Shrapnel -- I fly home the 29th, so I should be around recovering when you come in. I'm planning to go up the mountain after a goat I drew a tag for the last wek of September. I'm likely going to take my .338 Fed RSI or my .338 RCM Hawkeye, though if I need to save weight I'll take my SS/Ti .260 Rem. Hopefully I'll be in good enough recovery form to hike up with the group of friends who have offered to help me.

Of your menagerie of rifles -- if you want to take a bolt action, the .270 or '06 would seem to be the right ones. Of the single shot/lever guns -- I think anything from the .40-65 on up would be cool.

It can rain or snow in many places, not just Alaska, so sufficient care should suffice for you. I take a waterproof light case, just to add some chances. I'll loan you one of mine, if you want.

If you were just going for goat and wolf, I would recommend your 25-06 or the 270. However, since you have included bears (assuming brown bear), of the cartridges you listed I would go with your 300 WBY, using 150s for the goat and wolf and 200-220s for bear. If you mean black bear, you could easily get by with a 270 for all three. Lou

The only goat I have taken was two years ago. He soaked up 2 180 Partitions from a 30-06 and still managed to do his death dive. Fortunately the horns were not damaged fall. It did require extra care from the Taxidermist. While boning him out, I had a furry visitor who wisely walked away. So I guess I'd take a 30-06. Hunting and recovering goats is hard, might as well stack the odds in your favor.

Something plastic and stainless would be my first choice. GOOD bullet placed low and foward.

Now that would be a reason for him to buy a new rifle... . Sure didn't show one in the safe...

I was gonna say that but since he didnt have any in the safe I thought he might not take to kindly to that but thats what I would have.

This year will be my 9th guiding for goats, the other guides & I always like to see a hunter carrying at least a .30 cal. Last year a client wacked a goat w/ a 300WM 180 gr. Berger in the lungs. The goat walked around a bit until he found the perfect place to roll, he went about 100 yds. The bullet didn't exit!

Whatever you use, go with a heavy bullet, something that will penetrate. The best shot is to try to break the shoulders down, they can't move much if you do that.

Even our Nevada goats get BIG. For years the #2 B&C goat was from here. 4 yrs ago we weighed the head & cape of one, 142 lbs.
