My dad recently really suprised me by saying he missed out on a deal on a Win. 94 in 30/30(and it was a heck of a deal). He never mentioned wanting a 30/30 before and I told him I liked the 336 better and of the 2 94's and 3 336's I've had/shot, the 336's were noticeably more accurate.

So I was in a gunshop and they had a 336 in 30/30, short mag, that looks to have been carried quite a bit but not shot a lot so I bought it for him. I know he'll ask about when it was made, the ser. # is J524XX, I think it was made in 1952? Does that sound right? Also they have a really clean 336 in 35 rem for 299.99, is that a good price?.........Scott

You are correct, J indicates 1952. A 336 .30-30 with a short mag tube would be a Sports Carbine - those are great rifles!

A 336 .35 for $299.99 is definitely a good deal, could be a great deal depending on year of manufacture and model. A quick perusal of gunbroker shows a well used one with pitting on the receiver currently at $230, looks like ones in excellent shape are being offered in the low $400 range.

.

I agree with Jim, a nice 336 in 35 Cal. is worth more than $300.
Better jump on that one unless it's a pile of rust.

I went back and looked at the 35 Rem, it has a walnut stock, with a metal nosecap on the forearm. It has a solid rubber pad instead of the factory buttplate, but the stock hasn't been cut and the rear site is missing the elevator so maybe they can be restored. The only significant bluing wear is just in front of the lever boss and the bore is spotless. The pic is from an auction, the one I'm looking at is the same

However I was wrong on the price, it would be 380.00 out the door and the serial # is G3149. The serial # is a bit uneven like it was hand stamped. Is this a good price for a 35?

The G serial number indicates a 1950 manufacture date. If the one you're looking at is identical in configuration to the one in the picture then that 24" barrel indicates it's an ADL or A model. It should have wavy lines on the top of the receiver and not drilled and tapped, plus it will have the Ballard rifling. I'm no expert on Marlins by any means and at $380 am reticent to say what is good value or not. Unless it is just all beat to crap that still sounds like a very fair price for sure.

But I will say that is another great rifle even if it was in just "beat up shooter" condition. They are very classy pieces and in that configuration and caliber it has the potential to be very accuracte as well.

Thank you for the reply Jim. The rifle is exactly like the one in the pic, except the bluing is nice and crisp except for in front of the lever boss it is very worn from carrying. The rifle in the pic has browned and not nearly as nice as the one I'm looking at. It does indeed have the wavy lines on top and is NOT drilled and tapped. I thought I saw 39A stamped on the barrel, but I was looking at 4 marlins and wasn't sure I was keeping everything straight.

I think I'm going to get it, most 30/30's around here go for about 350.00 in this kind of condition, if the bluing is worn pretty good they go for about 250.00 so while it might not be a steal I think it is a fair price for a nice hunting rifle. Compared to a savage 99 these are a steal.

Does anyone have a pic of a correct buttplate for these? I'm going to have to find one as well as a rear sight elevator.................Scott

So I picked up the rifle I got for my dad, got it home and was looking it over, I about fell over when I looked at the barrel script and saw that it is a "336 SC 35 Remington". I never looked closely cause the tag on the rifle said "Marlin 336 30/30"

My dad really wanted a 30/30 for hunting so I gave him a like new 336W I've never even shot. I guess I'll keep this one and use it for hunting, it's no safe queen. Unfortunately along with the worn bluing some knucklehead drilled and tapped it, rather poorly as you can see in the pics.

My only question is what can I do to make this rifle more shooter friendly as far as the sights are concerned? The front bead is fine, but the rear sight is lacking and seeing how it is all bunged up I might as well do whatever it takes to make it a better hunting gun. On the plus side, it handles great and has a fantastic trigger pull............Scott

BTW this was 267.00 out the door, at that price I definitely want to knock down some critters with it.

I'm with Ange, I mean MossyOak1957, I think you got the better end of that deal.

Yeah, I hear ya but I'd like to keep iron sights. What are my options? As far as scopes,1.5 or 2 or 3X20? Dad is tickled with the 30/30 so it's a win-win in my book....Scott

I kinda like the side mount receiver sights . An older Lyman would look great on there. Should be no need to change the front sight unless you want to.
