Cant wait! this will be the first year I will really get into goose hunting...mostly because last year I shot my first one late December and it tasted great.
I have 2 friends that are going to be showing me how "they" do it.
We'll see what happens.

our goose start the same day . we'll be shooting canadas

Best thin I ever did with geese was have summer sausage made. Killed about 30 one year and breasted them out and froze them until the season was over. Took them to a butcher who did the deed. Very tasty and easy to give to friends as a gift.

Good luck on the first!

Thanks, the one i shot in December I put in a crockpot for a day and in all honesty tasted like venison roast.

I'm wondering if their meat has a different flavor during early season compared to late season.

Was thinking BB and a full choke to start and working different chokes from there.

We run 1's and BB mostly.
Chokes imp in lead = mod in steel.
mod in lead = full in steel

I would not go anymore than a mod choke which is really full in steel.

I think I'm going to start with an improved choke and I just bought these shells.

Winchester X-pert

You running 3" or 3.5"?

Federal Black Cloud ammo has impressed me. Cheap and puts the birds down. We ran 3", BB, last year and dropped our limit of birds. We hunt on the MI/IN boarder.

What dont you like about the Winchester X-pert?
I bought it because it was cheaper than most the others but the Kent was pretty close too.

On a point blank in your face decoyed bird anything will work. I do decoys and a fair amount of pass shooting. Win X-pert did not pattern awell as Kent so I quit using them. You may find ot diff . Do yourself a favor and pattern your gun. Geese are tuff and need a good hit for a good kill. Chasing cripples sucks.

Good luck

We were 1 shy from our limit of 9 today. We had 3 shooters.

We would of had our limit, but we had to be off the field @ 830am.

What a gorgeous AM today. Hope everyone did well.

Two of us ran Black Cloud 3", BB and one buddy ran 3.5" Fiocchi.

We saw quite a bit in the first 3 days - the rest has been about 0.

Scratched 7 outta the sky between Wed and Thur. Been out every day since and see the occasional single - a long ways out. Wonder if it's the weather...

Well - I prefer some weather. I am no expert on geese/ducks but we always did better with weather. Maybe it's just the cold front and not actually the rain?

The most important thing in early goose season is....
You must be between the roost and feed areas and preferably hunting the feed area itself !

The opening morning my group got 6 birds. That night we got 1 more. The 3rd day we hunted a new field the birds were using. The group was not shooting well that morning. Should have had our limit the first 20 minutes. The birds came faster than I could reload ! After 4 trips 2 morning and 2 night(1 night we got skunked) hunts got 18 birds so far.
Took a couple days off to let the birds calm down. Might go in a morning or 2.

BTW...I like over cast days the best w/alittle wind . Keeps the shine off the decoys!

I'm no expert just my 2 cents.

Good luck !
