I recently purchased some Garrett+P Hammerhead ammo for my guide gun. 420 and 540gr.. Pretty awesome ammunition. (On both ends) Hunkering down on a bench off bags- it hurts.
But that's not the main question...... I also have a Siamese Mauser in .45-70 that is my favorite. If I'm not mistaken, Garrett does not recommend this ammo for this bolt action rifle, and I haven't tried it. I know it can't be a pressure/action strength question.
So, what's the deal? Will it not feed properly, chamber properly or what??
Maybe I'm off in left field. Someone set me straight please!

doesn't matter. i dont know the answer in regards to the action but if the ammo manufacturer says stay away i would heed it. by the way, that 540 must look awesome! i imagine if you just show it to the deer it would fall dead from fright <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> woofer

I could be (and probably am) wrong on this, but I think the warning is due to some other actions being short-throated, while the Garrett is designed to work in Marlins, which have more generous throats. The warning may be due in part because of older bolt guns that have been rechambered, too.

I have read that the only reason for not using blunt nosed bullets in a bolt action is due to the difficulty of cycling through the action. The Siamese Mauser is far superior to any lever action in terms of pressure limitations.According to my reloading manuals My Marlin GG has a 40,000cup max. The Hodgedon manual has a fourth level of 45-70 pressures for Ruger No.1's and bolt actions not to exceed 50,000cup. The only limitation for the Mauser is whether or not a particular bullet design will reliably cycle in your action.

I think if you load your Mauser up with a caseful of Clays you will quickly realize the error in your thinking.

A 540 grain bullet? How does the OAL function through the levergun?? I have an 1895SS but I never used a slug over 450 gr. Marlin rebarreled it for me into Ballrd cut rifling because I never could cast a hard enough bullet for the old microgroove rifling. That rifle shoots well regardless of what ammo I stuff into it and try--so far. Enjoy.
