Can I expect a short barrelled .357 (new) to shoot cast bullets and personal defense (I'm thinking 125 grain frangibles for home and vermin) to about the same degree of accuracy?

I have found my 1894CP to be quite accurate with 158gr hard cast gas checked bullets from Leadheads.

www.proshootpro.com

I run them pretty hot and get no leading.

It also shoots very well with 125gr JHP. I use WW296 and mag primers. With a load under max in the Speer #13 manual, I've been getting a little over 2000 fps and very good 50 yard accuracy. I've taken it with me while scouting turkeys in the buttes where I hunt, but Wile E. Coyote hasn't cooperated in giving me a chance to see how the bullets actually work. SW
