Please bear with me as I am new to flyfishing the Salmon River. I fully understand you get what you pay for, but what is a decent 8 weight rod/reel set up in the $100-$200 price range. The guys I am going with recommend Okuma and say they have a good drag system, buy they seem cheap to me. Any suggestions?

i personally use a 10 wt, friends use 8 and 9. i personally thought an 8 was a little light.

i have an able super 10 and another able with anti reverse.

i would look into the redington cdl reels, they are great and under priced in my opinion

I have 3 Okuma fly reels. I have an SLV 8/9 on my St Croix 9 1/2 foot 8 wt rod and have caught a bunch of salmon on this set-up. I love Okuma reels and 2 years ago was the first season with the SLV and it is great. My brother and a buddy both have them and we have had no issues.

made a trip to the salmon last sun and mon and headed back this sun and mon again, its getting better every day

Tip335: One might get more informed feedback if he elaborates a bit on his target species. For instance, an 8 wt would be fine for the largest trout in windy condtions. It might not fill the bill if the target is a 40 lb king salmon.
