I stumbled into Kroil, (the oil that creeps!) while working in the Marshall Islands for GE. All machinery out there rusts like there is no tommorrow and good penetrating oil was always welcome. Kroil was GREAT! There was also another one called I believe Tascon but I have not seen it anywhere else.
Now I see that a lot of shooters use Kroil in their guns for cleaning.
Is there some sort of acid mixed into it to make it work so well?
The label says it will seep into a crevice of a millionth of an inch. Larry at work wants to know how they keep it in their stamped out sheet metal cans! ha! I looked and the seem does not appear to be soldered.... mysteries mysteries!

You can go to Kroil's site and look at the MSDS and check it out ... here are the ingredients listed there:
30-50% Petroleum base oil
1-10% Aliphatic Petroleum Distillate
1% - 10% Petroleum Solvent
1% - 10%Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Solvent
1% - 20% Non-Hazardous Proprietary Mixture
20%-40% Petroleum Naptha
1% - 10% Hydrocarbon Solvent
All ingredients in Kroil are listed in the TOSCA inventory list

Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Solvent its a mixture of hydrocarbon components of which none are cyclic (all straight chained backbones).

avagadro (chemist extraordinaire):
Aren't "Petroleum base oil, " Aliphatic Petroleum Distillate", "Petroleum Solvent", "Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Solvent", "Petroleum Naptha", and "Hydrocarbon Solvent" all generic terms that can mean pretty much the same thing. I suppose naptha, and petroleum solvent and hydrocrbon solvent could have a few aromatics in them. But aren't they all hydrocarbons refined from crude oil in approximately the same boiling range? I guess that the "Non-Hazardous Proprietary Mixture " is the pixy dust that makes it special?

It's good stuff. Especially mixed with 'aero'. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Okay, just kidding, as 'aero-kroil' is just Kroil in a spray can. We like it on our $14,000,000 helos which operate in serious salt spray too.

Kano Labs, the makers of Kroil, put out good products. I have used most all of the stuff they make and have never been disapointed in any of the products I have used. Penephrite which is kroil with graphite in it will absolutely loosen a frozen sealed bearing and put it back in running condition if you just let it sit a while. Silikroil which is kroil with silicone works even better on surface applications than kroil does at fighting moisture and corrosion. Weatherpruf will protect bare metal from rusting for at least six month outside. Their engine degreaser is the best stuff I have ever used in my life for its intended use. Dealing with as much wornout, rusty junk as I do I buy Kano products by the case. I am not in any way affiliated with the company just a very very satisfied user of their products. They only sell by mailorder and will deal over the net. www.kanolabs.comAnd when they say try it and if you don't like it send it back and they will give you credit they mean it. BCR

BCR;
Thanks for the link.
I'm gonna look at their other goo too!
Kroil and Militec. Good stuff.
I put militec in my truck and my jeep. Expensive though.

What can Kroil do for a gun better than WD-40?

It won't eat out o-rings like wd40 does. and It doesn't get gummy or sticky as wd40 does. WD40 is not good for guns.

WD-40 is not a deep penatrating oil like kroil oil, kroil works fast to penatrate dirt, grim, rust, ect.
About the only thing WD-40 is good for is spraying relays in electrical systems, other then that is a pretty useless oil compaired to others, Just my openion, not trying to start A flame...............

Straydog that is an honest question. I have used WD-40 since it came on the market years ago. I have used every penetrating oil there is I think searching for something that works well.
You've already had two correct answers. Kroil just simply works better as a penetarating oil than anything I have ever used. Including WD-40, S'OK. Mystery Oil, etc etc.

And I always thought it was KeRosene and OIL!<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Maybe KReeping OIL.
Love the stuff though, works better than anything I've tried.

OK I am convinced, even though I have never had any rusting appear on my guns. I do remember seeing rusted guns before silicon products like WD-40 became popular. If it is time to abandon silicon and go back to petroleum which is better between Marvel Mystery Oil and Kroil? I have heard the benchresters liking Marvel Mystery oil because it supposedly does not throw the first shot wild?

I wear WD for aftershave. Drives the ladies crazy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
What does it mean when the primers fall out of the case?

Starydog I can't help you there as I have never used Mystery Oil as a bore cleaner/preservative.
If you like silicone try Silikroil which is kroil with silicone. They'll sell you a can. I use it where moisture/humidity is a big problem.

Actually WD-40 is a degreaser........use it to remove tar from your vehicle.
