AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS
NOTE THE MAGNITUDE UPGRADE TO 8.3

ORIGIN TIME - 1748Z 29 SEP 2009
COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST
DEPTH - 33 KM
LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION
MAGNITUDE - 8.3

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
APIA UPOLU WS 13.8S 171.8W 1832Z 0.70M / 2.3FT 08MIN

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Better get out to see Yellowstone while we still can folks. It may not be there in our lifetimes the way the world is rumblin.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Oh, if Yellowstone goes at full scale, that will BE the end of our lifetimes.

I can never remember how zulu time relates to EST?

Hope my old friends on Kwaj are high and dry.

It could be bad. I just saw a news flash of a 20-foot wave that smashed Pago Pago. Report unconfirmed, but communications with the island were lost. Saw it on Google News once, now it's gone.

Edit: Now saying it was a five-foot wave, but it destroyed a village and killed three. Facts are understandably chaotic just now.

The NWS just dropped the warning they said the Tsunami is not expected to hit Hawaii, but there may be some strong currents in the area.

American Samoa....great. Isn't that where Pelosi's husbands tuna fishing fleet is based? I can see the never ending flow of cash headed there as we speak!

My step-brother is an English professor in Samoa. Fortunately, he, his wife and kids are fine. He did say they sure had a rude awakening this morning! grin

Guam is not threatened by Tsunami's, it is surrounded by the deepest oceans in the world. The island edges drop straight off into deep water not very far out. It's when the wave runs into shallow seas that the high wave develops. Think of it as channeling that energy into a shorter column

The first report I read on MSN gave the time as "dawn". Damn! Whose dawn, theirs, mine, new york, or Zulu. Since the news is aimed at Americans, they could give something like EST. Sometimes I think I should set this computer to GMT, also. I did set a lathe at work that way years ago, but my guy reset it to reflect when break and quitting comes.

So much for going off subject. Is there a Tsunami forecast for California, AK, Mexico? That was my original intent in looking.

They're projecting the waves to hit the Northern Oregon Coast at about 9:30 PM (PDT). Less than a foot.

The hazzard in Guam would be like it is when a typoon approaches. Rip tides and undertows. I know two guys, UDT members, who where diving on the edge of a reef. They were over about 200 feet of water at actually ten feet deep. An undertow got them and they couldn't kick out. It dragged them down about 50 feet and they could not kick out. If they had not been wearing inflatable vests they would be dead. Both were well trained enough not to allow themselves to breath as they got sucked down. Even when they inflated and dropped their belts they still had to kick. Some tough dudes man, I, as a sport diver, probably would have died.
