Picked up some old ammo just for the pristine condition original boxes. One I hadn't seen before is called Gevelot.

This particular box is "SPE .30-06 180 grain SP-CEB" which I'm guessing is Soft Point - Controlled Expansion Bullet.

Any ideas on this manufacturer? Sounds frenchy, so I'm thinking Eastern Canada....?

Puddle, you bought some good ammo! It was assembled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from Norma components in the 1970's. In a coincidence, I just bought 100 rounds last week from a gunsmith in Saskatoon. Mine is 7x57, bullet is the same as yours but 7mm 174 gr. - and my Ruger #1a likes it! I'm not sure about the performance of those bullets on game, but the brass is high quality as you'd expect from Norma.

Good info! I was figuring late 60'ish ammo because it had a price sticker still on it for $5.15.

G�velot stopped all production of ammunition a while ago.

I'm not sure the brass is Norma,I think it might be Carl Gustav or even Lapua. My 30.06 brass is different and better than my Norma of that era.Good brass.

Gevelot was a french company which made ammunition and other things like some explosive devices and mecanical products. The company shut down years ago

Sorry i send the message by mistake: back to Gevelot, the ammunition and firearms activities of the group were shut down but the company Gevelot SA based in France and worldwide is always operating in mecanical, metal extrusion and volumetrics pumps sector.They produce parts for automobile groups. Jean Marin Gevelot breveted a fulminate percussion cap in 1823 and founded the first Gevelot company. in 1935 the company was included in the SFM group (Soci�t� Fran�aise de Munitions)In the 20th century before closing in 1997 of the the ammo and firearm plants the company made some semi auto 22lr carbines and 9mm submachine guns.
The 22lr carbines were open bolt system and there was a full auto version with selector and 20 rounds mag made for prison guards....The last version was a fully suppresed one...

I picked up a box of Gevelot .338, 265 gr RN bullets around 1980 when I had a .338-'06. I loaded them to 2480 ft/sec and tested them in a recovery box filled with moist fresh sawdust & silt. This mix is 'softer' than that recommended by Bob Hagel, which uses rotted sawdust, but the relative values are comparable. The 250 gr Nosler Sp, tested in the same medium, penetrated 7"-8" more at all distances. Penetration of the Gevelot was 30" at muzzle, 34" at 100 yds, 34" at 200 yds and 35" at 340 yds. The bullets performed very well, retaining 55%-60% of initial weight. They appear to have two core densities, the front section is quite soft, expands well and is easily shed, while the rear section is very hard and does not expand at all. Cavity diameter was very similar to that of the Nosler 250 Sp. Other than having a low BC and needing to be seated rather deep in the case, I found no flaws with this bullet.
