Like the title says, let's see those gun dogs!

I've got a Golden, and a Shepherd - haven't hunted with the Golden yet, he's only a 12mos. He's got a knack for marking targets and getting them in order though, so provided I can get the bird out of the sky, he can bring it back.

The shepherd's another matter altogether.

Both smart as a whip and leading the NILIF life with good results.

Awesome pics guys!

Ingwe - those are some phenomenal pics!

It never occurred to me to use a dog to track large game, what a great reason to bring a pup to deer camp.

Yep, she has come in pretty handy. It is illegal here to use a dog to hunt big game...locate and/ or haze them, so she was trained to stay strictly at heel and watch the show, sometimes even on a leash. Taught her to move by hand signals alone, up to and including crawling when need be.... Only when something got shot and ran out of sight was she deployed....
In a couple cases where we were uncertain of a hit, she provided quick confirmation, either positive or negative. She always knew exactly what she was doing, and why she was there...used to get visibly upset when I passed up a shot... grin

Couple more pics...We had shining times...and still do..but its only fishing for her now...

I had my hands full for the first part of the season teaching the boys and the dog but by the end of the season they were hitting more than misssing and Earl figured it out. I learned a lot about training dogs and boys last year.

Here is my Golden with some birds he has hunted. Sad but he is getting old (just about 10 now). I don't how many days in the field he has left. I hope to get next year out him. I don't know what I will do when his hunting days are done. 9 species of upland birds he has gotten for me. 4 states he has hunted in.

VERRRRRY cool pics...

But I know what you mean....as I mentioned in earlier posts,Ingwedog is "retired" from hunting, and indeed alot of the fishing in tough country ( she used to run interference between me and moose, or griz)shes not fast enough for that any more. Shes still sharp as a tack, and a pleasure to be around, and no one or no thing has ever known me better, but the day is coming, sooner now than before, and its killing me...

Here's my 3 year-old Golden waiting patiently for ducks. She has improved unbelievably in two years and tons of training. For example, with two teal swimming just outside the decoys, I told her to lay down and stay, which she did (but she was quivering with excitement and whining quietly). Two years ago she'd have bounded into the water after them. She now has pretty good manners when duck hunting.

Your pic reminded me of my Brittany, here seen on her last Grouse hunt with our hunting buddy...
She considered herself aristocracy or something, cause every time I killed a rabbit around her she looked at me as if I were the lowest form of trash on the planet... grin

Clancy tried that " I'm better than this crap" when I first got him.

Then I reminded him that a he was poor mans dog and he best retrieve what I told him to even if he did have several hundred more years of superior breeding than I did.

The upland bird hunting where I live is fairly limited but I just love springers.

Good looking brit.

Mannnnn...I always loved beagles!!!!

Took one Jackrabbit hunting one day, first rabbit got up, dog gave chase, rabbit looked back and put it into "turbo"
The dog literally stopped and looked over his shoulder at me like " you have GOT to be kidding!!!

Cool pics...

But the Aussie is the Brainiac of the bunch, I'll bet... grin

The Aussie is definitely the brains of the group. He's the smartest dog I've ever owned. I noticed he has a ton of meat over his skull; must be evolution's way of providing additional protection for the brain in there.

GV...I just saw those pics on the European forum...

Really cool beans man..

I don't think we utilize our gun dogs to their fullest potential here in the states...get too caught up in the dog being a "pheasant" dog, or a "grouse" dog etc...

REALLY liked your older pic of a GSP pointing a hare... grin

I think the Aussie is the most adaptable... a Border collie has even MORE brains, as far as what it can assimilate..but the Aussies are usually more "free thinkers"...Wicked Smart...

My number one dog, as youve seen...is an AussieX Border Collie, and luckily I got the best of both worlds...I train dogs professionally ( not gun dogs...oddly enough...Service Dogs and Police K9) and my dog was used to teach ME how to train..
If I told you all she was capable of, I'd sound like the Lee24 of the Dog World!!! grin

We use to hunt most of our small game and birds at a time (yesterday we were hunting pheasant, partridge, hare + possible pigeon, woodcock, rabbit, duck and potentially big game stuck in hays), so we naturally use our dogs, GSP and others, on all of them, and we tend to consider the hare as one of the most valuable ... and tasty.

I always considered rabbit to be every bit as good as our gamebirds, so always took them as targets of opportunity. Here of course we have four species, two types of jackrabbit( a true hare) which are next to inedible...and the Snowshoe Hare...really nice table fare, and large, like your hares, and finally Cottontail Rabbit...excellent eating.
As mentioned, my Brittany would have none of the dealings with them, and my "Hunting" cow dog sticks primarily to large game, though I think I posted a pic of her earlier in the thread with a Snowshoe Hare. I also have, and fish with( no hunting) a Border Collie....kicked up a big jackrabbit one day, and she is the ONLY dog Ive ever seen actually catch one...
Some of our Bird and big game seasons overlap here, and I had a freind whose dog, like mine, would point whitetail deer that were bedded and hoping to remain undetected. So much so, that he started hunting with an O/U combination gun, 12 ga over a 7x65R for just those occasions. Trouble was he was forgetful...would flip the selector switch and end up shooting 7x65R shells at pheasants!!! grin

Here's my Weimaraner in the back. Up front is my blue Great Dane pup. Obviously the Dane's not the hunter haha. But I'm sure we'll take her pheasant hunting with us just so she can get some exercise. And I think it'd be pretty funny to see some kid with a 160lb Great Dane hunting pheasant!

Have pasted their mugs more than a few times here. We are heading out for the afternoon, hope to have a critter pic for the evening. Toby the black Cocker only looks forlorn.

As you can see he gets a little boned up when the hunting clothes come out. grin

battue, is that a Springer on the right?

Not mine, but my son's setter and his BIL's hunting, and then cooling off. I don't know about the dog on the right, but the two on the left are brothers, litter mates.

Nebraska, I asked my son how and where they got them clean.

He said in the bathtub with lots of shampoo.

I didn't ask how the lady(ies) of the house reacted to that.

They live in St. Louis, and are up in Iowa chasing pheasants this week.

Ingwe, thank you for the kind words. He's a fine hunter, too. This Fall he worked three coveys of huns and three coveys of sharptails in a row, without making an error. That, and he's my farm buddy.

Battue, you are very much correct, the Partridge dog is said to be the purest remaining descendant of the orginal pointing dog the Spanish (SPANiel) developed in the 16th century for falconry and hunting with cast nets. How true that is, I don't know, but that's the lore of the breed. FWIW, Dutch.

Emilee's Rawhide Jake ( a.k.a the Jackal, Grim Reaper, and Little Shuggie ) on point.

I wish everyone could find a partner as great as he is.

Lochsa...awesome pictures man, you have real talent.

Nimrod1949....its good to see a Drahthaar. What awesome versatile dogs, and so many know so little about the breed. I have hunted over a couple of them in the last few years, my father-in-law had one. We had to put her down the same year we put down my lab.

all great dogs, all of them.

Here's my girl, Belle. She's Wirehaired Griffon. Best dog I've ever owned and will probably always have Griffs going forward. She's a bird machine

You, Sir, are a man after my own heart! I've had two of 'em, among other breeds, and every time I see one, the sight messes with (what's left of) my head. Super sharp dogs.
