How come no American made or import suvs and light trucks are diesel powered here in the U.S. ? Most exported American made suvs and light trucks are powered by diesels . It would be nice to be able to own a turbo charged 4 cycl diesel that pulled as hard as a gas V6 and got 30 miles to the gallon .

VW sells a fine one (suv) if you're interested. Cheap, too. Called the Toureg. Go to www.kiplinger.com and read "The Diesels are coming". August edition. You can access it. Old Toot.

When I was in Iraq some of the spooky guys had Toyota "Tacoma type" trucks in Diesel, I wish we could get them here in the states.
The 4 door toyotas aren't anything new either. I was asking Toyota dealers about them in the early 1990's. I was told they didn't exist. They sure hated it when I showed em pictures.

there are all kinds of odd/unusual vehicles not sold here in the states. Ford still makes the Ranchero for Australia, toyotas 4 doors pickups (called Hilux or something), honda also makes a hybrid on/off road motorcyle that is popular in some parts of Europe. I guess it is all about marketing...still don't see why they won't put diesel engines in more vehicles.
"It might be gone when you get here, but basically it's a green, '64 Chevy, driving West down Maine Street. No, I can't make out the licence plate, but ...errrr... it'll be pulling a small church. So any Green Chevy pulling a church down Main Street, I guess that'll be the one."

I agree. GM sells a 3.0 liter turbo diesel in a Chevy Colorado for the overseas market. Such an engine in a Trailblazer--with a power module added of course--would be perfect for my wife and an excellent complement to my '02 2500 Dmax.

Emissions. The emissions requirements are stricter for cars and light trucks than they are for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Volkswagon has it's TDI Jetta that meets the non-california emissions, but most other manufacturers don't want to bother with it. I believe we'll see more light diesels when the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel becomes required in 2007. It's the sulfur content of U.S. diesel fuel that keeps the engines from meeting emissions. Europe has used ULSD for quite a while.

Thanks for the info . I have a 97 TJ Jeep thats getting some age on it and plan to replace it in a few more years . I can't decide what to replace it with. I like the Jeep Rubicon and Toyota Tacoma but with todays gas prices their mileage suck . Hopefully the car dealers will have something by 2007 .

Ford's testing a lighter Diesel engine/transmission package in it's lite panel delivery type trucks that will hopefully find its way into the F-150's...I read about it in OFF ROAD Magazine or some magazine a few months ago.

I remember back in 1982 when I had a Toyota Diesel pu. It got over 40 mpg and was reliable to a fault. In over six years all it needed was oil changes and a new timing belt.
Why won't Toyota bring a diesel truck back to the American market? I think it's an evil conspiracy with the oil companies <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
The technology is there to produce high mileage vehicles, someone is keeping them from reaching the market. I don't even want to get started on alternative fuels, etc.

The technology has been here for high mileage vehicles for a long time . All this talk about hydrogen fuel cells and alternative fuels is a bunch of crap ! We have not got the most effcientcy out of the internal combustion engine yet . Propane injected diesels and water injected gas engines come to mind . There is no reason why full size trucks can't get 25+ mpg . and suvs can't get 30+ mpg . The demand for fuel would go down and thus the price would go down . The less burned hydrocarbons the less polution . A win win situation .

My next-door neighbor and wife both work for Toyota (corporate). Toyota will be offering a diesel in the next gen. Tundra. I don't have a date yet, but I can't wait.
