Yep, a gut shot with 30 is much better than a lung shot with a lesser... but I know what ya mean...

my favorite is a 243 for elk. it flies fast and it doesnt much matter the size if you can get the right bullet placement.

For a flat up to elk gun a 300RUM with any 200grainer backed by about 94grs of Vn-N570 will do 3140fps+.........

Under that; 22-06 with 80gr Nosler CC....or 6mm/264WM cool

Currently working a 125g ballistic tip load for my 300 wsm for yotes. It seems pretty flat to me... haven't been shooting it in very "controlled" environment, so no data to show. I just put put the little + where I want to hit the little guys. 300 yards or less needs no adjustment. I did miss a 270 yard shot at a goose's head though. Don't know if that was me, the bullet or the wind though. Rifle's zeroed @ 200 for Etip 180g.

The .257-Weatherby shoots pretty flat out to 300 yards! However, I would not consider it a go to caliber for elk hunting nor bears etc.

If you can handle the recoil, the .300-RUM is very flat shooting with a 180 grain bullet traveling at 3350fps.

Sorry but the 6.5*55 and 264win mag are very hard to beat. Why has no one mentioned 6mmbr?

Flattest shooting? That's easy. .228 Ackly Improved!
Not sure anything else come close.

Lots of speculation, but no actual come-ups.

For instance, my 7Wby. 100 yrd zero, 3 MOA up puts me dead on at 300. 162grn A-max. Sorta flat IMHO. 10MOA up, dead on at 6.

What are you guys doing?

The original OP says he never shoots beyond 300 yards, but let's give it 400 or so....within those parameters, and to 300 yards, cartridges giving 2800-3200 fps,if zeroed the same at 100,don't show much difference....at 300 yards.

By the time you get to 400 things have changed and the differences can be substantial enough that, with some(the faster ones)you could still hold on hair on a deer with the faster combo's, while needing your turrets, or dots (or whatever method you use),with others.

Much of this depends on the speed of the cartridge and how much mid range it is prudent to utilize. Within 400-500 yards, sheer velocity seems to trump BC with many bullets, but I have seen, for example, a 150 gr 7mm Scirrocco(when started over 3150) shoot a full MOA "flatter" at 400-500 yards than anything else that I have used.

Ditto have been a 120 TTSX from a 7mm Dakota at 3550;and a 130 XLC at over 3600 from a 300 Win mag.Using any of these it is important to watch your mid-range trajectory carefully, but assuming no more than 3.5" rise at midrange, all are in the vicinity of 7-8" fo drop at the 400 yard mark;and 20-24" down at 500.

the 257 WBY is the flattest shooter I have ever owned. I would not hesitate on an elk or black bear with the TSX's I shoot. Smoked everything I have ever aimed at out to just shy of 500. YMMV

That`s right Bob, and remember a MOA at 4-500 yrds is a 4-5 inch difference in bullet impact.

A flat shooter has a defendant advantage.

Addressing the original post, a .257 Weatherby with a 80gr TTSX launched at 3850 drops 6.1" at 300 yards from a 100 yard zero. The 100gr TTSX launched at 3600 drops 6.8". If someone could show me a cartridge reasonable for everything up to Elk that shoots flatter than that inside 300, I'd be very interested...

The 7RM with a 120gr TTSX would come very close. The 120BT would work well too.

30/378 with 125 NBT at 3835fps (Nosler max) is 5.9 inches down at 300 yards from a 100 yard zero.

240 Weatherby Mag with 62g GS Customs HV bullets at 4100 fps is 4.6 inches down at 300 yards with 100 yard zero.

For wildcats.
The 22 CHeetah is hard to beat.
A 52g Berger bullet at 4100fps requires 1.4 inches of up,to be dead on at 300 yards from a 100 yard zero.Same bullet requires 2.5 inches of up, to be dead on at 400 yards.
All from a 26 inch Hart 1-16 twisted SS barrel.
Accuracy is sub .5 MOA at 300 yards.
