does anyone know if the Z3 uses the leaf spring or the coil springs? I know that the VX3 has the coil springs now.

Anyone have the Z3 yet?

the VX3 does not use coil springs, i believe swarovski has a patent on a 4 point coil spring. The VX3 uses dual leaf springs

No one relies more on the name to sell product than Leupold. Not that there's anything wrong with that. whistle

I'm glad this thread came up because I was under the impression that all of the Z scopes were coil. What was the point to discontinue the AV if the Z3 was going to be leaf springs?

I looked at Doug's Cameraland website and the 1" Z5 states that it is coil springs, but says nothing regarding the Z3 spring system.

Does anyone know what kind of spring system is in the Zeiss Conquest?

In my mind.....I think all these scope manufacturers are working with "old" technology;I suspect that all these scopes are constructed pretty much the same; maybe some hold tighter tolerances, use better materials, more care in assembly, etc.,but (I will call on the experts to respond here)I'll bet that most variable technology really has not changed much in the last 40-50 years.................

When is some manufacturer going to give us something 100% reliable so we can end these silly conversations? whistle

I don't believe they can't do it.......or maybe,the real problem is...... variables?

Yeah, the forum has some folks that really know the technology points of optics. Maybe we will hear from some. I think the Swaro PH is a variable that is close to 100% reliable but they are too big and too heavy for my tastes. The Z5 is probably the best bet weighing just under 16 oz. but I don't care for the power range of 3.5-18. I would much rather have a 2-10.
I am pretty happy with my Conquest 3-9x40 but I will probably read somewhere that it has a leaf spring system and then I will start doubting.

Amen, on all fronts.
Something to consider, and that is fixed power scopes. Just keep them in mind when deciding on what scope to buy for a given hunting scenario. The rifle is incidental in the decision. However, YMMV.
Peronally, I would love to be able to influence the high end scope makers into making high end, fixed, 3x, 4x and 6x scopes.

I was really entertaining the idea of dropping some coin on the new 12 oz. Z3 even during the recession, but forget it if it's not made any better than the AV.

SD: Well you never know;it might be......I don't think there's a nicer scope from the standpoint of size;certainly the optics are likely great.I doubt Zeiss is using anything other than a leaf spring system in the Conquest....MD had good things to say about the Z3............I MIGHT take a shot at it.....

A few members...... can't remember who exactly, have posted about actual faliures on the Swaro AV, and I am wondering what if anything Swaro did internally different with the Z3?

I agree with the 4 point coil spring, THE PH/Z5/Z6 represents a distinct advantage in the "mechanics" of a scope...

Actually the reticle in front plane (PH) is usually more durable than rear plane (Z series) and thats because of reticle location, doesnt matter who is making it...

SO the PH would have a slight edge in durability over the Z6 because of reticle location....

I have nothing bad to say about the 3 Zeiss Conquests, and 1 Zeiss Diavari MC scopes that I have, the leaf springs work OK and seem to hold zero. On the other hand in the 3 x 9 range I have paid in the $500.00 range. I paid more for a Kahles, and for a 1-4 Nightforce that is built like a brick S house but the optics are simply not that good.

I don't mind spending the coin for a Z3 but then now why would I just to get the same technology that you will find in a $500 Zeiss Conquest? However for a 3 x 10 x 40 it is light.
