After a Mearns quail hunt in AZ with my two dogs I have a cow elk hunt that may not last more than a few hours near Raton. While waiting for the meat to be processed I need to get the dogs out on any public land for some good runs and hunting quail would be even better.
A days drive from Raton would be reasonable. What is avaible.
Thank you.

Reba I really do not know that northern country too well, except for the Chama area (not too many quail there) and the Kiowa NG. The kiowa should have scalys, but that is a ways to the east of Raton. Sorry I couldn't help, unless there is some state land up in that area. The following link is the quail write up from NMGF: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/publications/documents/QuailHabitat.pdfAll I know about the mearn's is that they scare the hell out of me, when I am trying to sneak around the forest all quite and such and stumble into a covey.

LNF150,
You said: "Where I live down south, gambel quail are as thick as house sparrows".
Is there public land hunting for the gambel quail near you?
I'm retired and have two bird dogs that I would love to get in a good quail patch.
Thanks

Reba,
We got public land galore where I live in the southern Sacramento mountains, east of Holloman AFB, Alamogordo, and White Sands. It's kind of the opposite end of the state from Raton, so I didn't know if you and your pups were up to that kind of a road trip? A lot around me is FS and BLM. The gambels are in the lower brushy country, below the PJ zone. I don't think many people constantly hunt them down here and honestly I don't know why, because this country is ripe with coveys and they are not hard to find either.
So that is what we've got down in the southern part of the state. If it sound like your kind of gig let me know.
