I have always used mediums on my varmint guns with a 40mm objective, but looking at the clearance I have, I am thinking I could be using lows and getting a better cheek weld. I hate to go to the expense of buying a bunch of new rings, but it might just help in the field. Got me kinda thinking about what scope rings are the best when weight is not a concern. I have always used Leupold QR rings and QRWs when on a weaver base. What do you fellas like and which height?
Screw you! I'm voting for Trump again!

talley split ring lows. my scopes are 40mm, 42mm or 50mm. all my rifles are short actions. plenty of clearance.

Higbean,
Get ready for the attack on me for telling you what I use. I use Burris Signature rings. The Signature rings prevent any scope ring marks and allow me to sight in the 1" scopes without turning the turrets. It's fun. My 30MM scope is stuck with the zero offset incerts; so the turrets are empoyed
High rings give me the equivlent apparent trajectory improvement of aproxamately 100 feet per second. The computer generated trajectory has been posted several times out to 1000 yards by different individuals on different itimes. It has been verified by me at the shooting range with an accurate rifle on a calm day to 300 yards.

Running mostly Zeiss 3-9x40's ( a couple of Leupold's 6x36) on my bolt actions (T3 lites) with medium height rings (talley, warne) but after looking over the space between the scope and barrel I ordered a set of DNZ game reapers LOW mounts to try out..

Low ring, one-piece lightweight Talleys as of late....and I love them for what that's worth.
It was Leupold (medium) bases and rings for the first 20 or so years, and I can't say a bad word about them, other than they are heavier than I care to pack around these days.
All of these are in relation to 40mm scopes by the way.

Talley, one piece (low I think) on 40mm scope.
I prefer a scope to be as close to bore as possible, and for my critter calling .243 went to a 32mm scope to get it lower. That one wears Redfields because that's the base that was on it when I bought it used. On another rifle which I seldom use I have Weaver bases and medium rings with a 40 mm scope, but it is too high for the stock and has never fit me like it did with low rings and a previous 32 mm scope. I find myself crawling the stock after mounting the rifle, OK for range work but not ideal for a smooth quick shot on game.

Burris Zee mediums. I MUCH prefer the mediums after trying the lows for years. I suppose talley lows are about like burris mediums, though I have not tried...

Burris Signature, medium (don't make a "low").
All with 40mm objectives, on a Vanguard, Remington 700, and Marlin 336.
Won't even think of using anything else.

I like low rings...there seem to be three heights of "low";talley LW, Leupold, and Weaver...Weavers are the lowest and I recently used them on a 375 H&H with a 3X Leupold;got Talleys on an 06,and the rest are leupold, mostly DD's.
On a Ruger Hawkeye I would but the Leupold low rings which are trim and nice, lighter and lower than factory.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Lows on my hunting rigs--I've been using Weaver style mounts with Burris Zee rings although they are not as lightweight as Talleys or Weaver rings.
Tally LW are too high for my taste.
On my varmint rigs I use mediums in a variety of mounts.....

Depends on where and how my face hits the stock when I'm in a hurry. Some of them are medium rings and at least one of them uses low rings. But the bottom line is that the image needs to be right there, w/o any need to move the head around to find it. If not, I find something that does. So far, with the stocks I use, usually medium rings work for me. E

E +++++ absolutely! If you have hunted with/experienced such a well fitting rifle, you'll never be satisfied with anything else. If we've never had a rifle/scope that fit like E is describing, we probably have no idea what he's talking about. You simply look at what you want to shoot (at the precise spot where you want the bullet to hit), mount the rifle and the crosshairs are imprinted on what you have never quit looking at as you raised the rifle.
