Okay! I bit the bullet, so to speak, and have acquired a Win Mdl 1885 in .243 caliber. It's pretty light weight and I'm hoping to keep it that way, but do intend to scope it. Looking for suggestions as to light weight mounting system and light weight scope suggestions.

Jerry Didn't the rifle come with rings and bases? There are a number of light weight scopes that would work from a 2 1/2 compact up to a 3X9 compact.. I put a cheap Simmons 2X7 Master Series ProHunter on a Lwt weight Rem Model 7 in 260 Rem this fall and really like it "but" I wouldn't recommend such a scope for someone else until I spend more time with it.. I have had problems with Simmons Aetec line in the past is why I say that..

Mine had a 6x36 and I kid you not, on final sight in before a Tx hunt, my buddy put the first 2 shots in 1/2" at 200 yds with 85 BTHP SGK, bases were Burris IIRC and may have been w/the gun, it was the Browning in 243, Georgeous wood...hate that I let that one go!

I don't have an authoritative answer because I don't mount modern scopes on my 1885s, however I have done so in the past. The thing to keep in mind is that the barrel configurations are different among the various models, and perhaps calibers, and this determines the appropriate front mount. I can't recall the specifics, but one time I ended up with a combination of Burris and Leupold bases that worked well, on a .22 IIRC.
Best advice I can offer is to contact the manufacturers of rings and bases to see what they offer and recommend. Might be a good idea to measure the diameter of your barrel where the front base goes, as a reference.

No bases/rings with this particular rifle. However, it is drilled and tapped. I haven't had time to look around for options for this rifle, but I do intend to move slowly and hopefully get things right the first time. I'm in no hurry since the weather precludes my working on loads for it. This will be a late winter/early spring project. I appreciate the information from the respondents to my request. Thanks!!

I didn't like the bulky factory bases and went with Conetrol bases and rings. These are a little less bulky but required shims to match a Zeiss scope with limited adjustments.
I am still thinking about a quarter rib milled for Talley rings.
