I was checking out an older 336 today. It was chambered in 30-30, and had a long barrel with a half length magazine. Really a nice gun. This gun had what looked like the original open sights, and has not been drilled for scope mounts. It did have two holes on the left side of the receiver. I was wondering if it would be possible to mount either a peep or a scope on this gun without having to drill. Any ideas? rimshot

Those two holes are for mounting a receiver sight. Both Williams and Lyman make sights to fit it and you can get them from Midway. Thanks...

Awesome! I was hoping that was the case. To be honest, I was not going to purchase the gun if I would need to drill. Thanks for the information.

well, since I have always wanted a 30-30 lever, and this one seemed pretty cool, I bought the gun. Model70Man , do you have any preference between the williams and lyman sights?

I'm sorry, I just found your last post. I like the Lyman and Williams Foolproof equally well. I have a Williams on my Marlin .45-70 and a Lyman on my .35 Remington. The Lyman is easier to adjust but you only have to adjust the sight once so no big deal.
The .35 is the rifle I go to more than the .45-70. I think because it is somewhat trimmer and lighter. I had a Pachmayr pad installed along with sling swivels and I think it's just about right for woods hunting here in WV.
Thanks...Bill.
