I only have a minute before I have to return to the shop and skin her out.
here is the rundown.
after a disappointing time saturday, my brother and I went back to try again. sure enough the same guy was there and he told us how he missed a standing shot the day before at 50 yards. and that the elk were on the golf course every morning, we opted to go by thm and hunt in the mountains and try and catch them on the way to their bedding grounds. well they had been so spooked by these road hunters (who bragged about attempting 1500 yard shots to the top of a ridge) that they were hanging back in the thick of it. we hiked about 3 or 4 miles and decided it wasn't my year and were going to head home because our time together with he family was limited. we peeked over a cliff and saw some thick trees, threw in a rock to see if it might kick something up, and it didn't. I took 3 steps and there were two bedded cows. no idea why the rock didn't spook em. but I pulled up, shot her in the spine and then finished her off with a shot to the noodle. we climbed down the cliff, took a quick pic with the cell and hurried to get her out so we could be home by dark. we had a 2 mile drag, but had a sled and thankfully a snowcat track to pull it on the logging road.

an awesome time was had, and it was the first time my brother and I have hunted together in about 15 years. I wouldn't trade today for anything
I got home and my little man was thrilled to see me and clapped when i showed him the meat that will see us through winter

I'm not back yet, we fly out tomorrow, hopefully it goes better than the trip out here.
5am-midnight traveling with a 16 month old is exhausting to say the least.

I'll be heading out to the shed in about 30 mins to start on the back straps, tenderloin, then shoulders and finish with the hind quarters and then trimmings.
most of it is going into burger and roasts.

Great picture Ryan. 2 mile drag, part of it uphill even with a sled is no job for us old timers. Good thing your young. I'd say this caps off a good year for you.

Oh ok, I didn't know you brought the little guy to grandma & grandpas. Bet that was fun for them too.

When you said the little guy was happy to see you I assumed you were back home already.

I also love the picture and story. Road hunters leave a bad taste in my mouth as well. I find no matter what I'm hunting. Get more than a few hundred yards from a road and you have the woods to yourself.

yeah he came out here with me so he could have some quality time with his cousins and grandpa and grandma. I wouldn't have come home without him.

their excuse for road hunting was bad knees/back

who doesn't have some type of thing bothering them?
no excuse for hunting from the road though. he was from texas I saw by the plates on his little jeep lookin car. really bothered me how they were doing it.

it is nice if you see them on the golf course, hike up and around, set up on the ridge above them and shoot them within a few hundred yards of the road, it makes for easy dragging, but they just drove the roads non stop and tried to run the elk to where they wanted them, and still couldn't hit them, and if they did they never followed up.
and I saw a lot of crows up there on the high ridge....

I used a ruger M77 MKII 7mm rem mag pushing 160 grain accubonds with 60 grains of RL22
the scope was a burris signature 6-24x50. I'm thinking of selling it and getting a 4-14 for it instead.

I don't remember that gun. I was wondering if you were going to carry around that big heavy .300 or not.

How did that accubond work? Obviously it worked, but you know what i mean.
