I love mine -- a Ruger #1 with a Leupie VX-II in 2-7X33. Shoots pretty good too. These have been posted before, but you're relatively new here. Welcome to the fire.





Mine shoots the 300 gr Barnes X real sweet with H4895 or Bencmark -- Varget, not so good.
I use 210 gr Sierra JHP 41 Mag pistol bullets and AA5744 for grouse and rabbits.

Get a .405 Winchester 1895. The lever that Elmer Keith said sounded like a boxcar being uncoupled when you worked the lever!

I am leaning towards the 95
my 45-70's - are a no1 & a Marlin
We are planning a moose hunt in Canada - 2010 or 2011
fly-in to a lake camp somwhere north of Wisconsin

Does the 405 lack bullet choices?
Am I better served by a Hawk 375 0r scoville 375 ?
I was looking for a little more speed than my 45-70's
2400 would be nice

Well, the current choices are limited in a Browning or Winchester 95, to .270, .30-40 Krag, .30-06 and, 405 WCF. You can get a vintage Winchester 1895, as I just did in .35 WCF for just a bit more than the new ones, thus you'll have more caliber choices. If it were me, I'd get the 405 and be done with it!;)

I'm getting better than 2400 ft/sec out of the #1, but I'm betting a lesser action may have trouble with the pressures. Nothing wrong with a 300 grainer at 2275 which is what factory fodder runs in my #1.

Try the 1895 in .405, it handles very well in the field and you can shoot bullets from 200 to 400 grains if you handload. There are several .405 afficienados about, so when you get yours, some good load data will surface.

The #1 is fine rifle and shoots well. However, IMHO, when compared to the 1895 it lacks, umm shall we say, historical gravitas.

Just look at crshelton's rifle...bears in AK, moose in Canada, outlaws in AZ, TR hunting East Africa...........hell I need a cigarette!

You can get a 405 in either the Winchester 85 (singleshot) or the grand model 95 lever gun. Jacketed bullets can be had from Hornady, Barnes, Hawk, Woodleigh, and Northfork. Cast bullets can be purchased or cast your own. Lots of powders and other options. Load it from wild to mild.
Factory loads avialable from Hornady and Winchester.
Great cartridge and quite versatile.

I love my 1895 and the .405 Win. Great combo.

Judge G over on AR, had his Win. 95 throat and magazine lengthened and that gave him some real powder capacity and he is getting 2100 FPS with a 400 gr. Bullet at reasonalbe pressure....

He hunted with us and used it very well indeed..Not to shabby a conversion and that is a buffalo, Lion, or Hippo gun for sure..It pretty much duplicates the original loadings of the 450-400 and 404 Jefferys of African fame..

This .405 conversion, and the 50-110 or 120 Win. are the only lever guns suitable for Buffalo, and Hippo IMO. The rest are stunts by inexperienced folks, that have not seen a mad buffalo or Hippo.

A charging hippo..that is an awsome thought.
