Hi guys,

New kid on the block with an old 39 got years ago from an uncle. I have problems with misfires. Gun is original and I notice the firing pin slides in/out when cocked. I think the problem may be it is worn and thus a little to short to hit the rim with enough force to ignite the primer. It shoots about 50% of the time.
I can push the pin in flush when cocked and ready to fire.

1) Should the firing pin move like that?
2) I bought a new pin from Numrich Arms but the quality is so inferior to the original I won't replace it.

I live in upstate NY near Albany, so if there are any Marlin smiths nearby I will gladly take it to them to get fixed. Just want somebody I can trust with a family heirloom.

Any help would be appreciated as I miss shooting the gun.

P.S. If this story looks familiar - I recently acquired a Savage 99 from the same Uncle (although now deceased). See Savage Collector Forum - New Member post by yours truly.

FYI - Gun is octagonal barrel, pistol grip, tubular, probably 1940 era. It is in the barn safe right now, will get the serial number and search for age shortly. Pics if necessary.

THanks,
Dal

Dal, I live in Scotia and all my work goes to Ken Delano, Charlton gun shop. Old school sorta guy, don't be turned away by his gruf exterior. He's mostly a Remington and Winchester guy, and loves working on expensive shotguns, and he will put your family 39-treasure right.

If you're on the other side of the river, try Steve's gun shop in Stephentown, north go to Beecroft's in Greenwich.

Jeff,

I know Steve - have visited his shop and bought a couple guns from him, will give him a call. Also patronize Beecroft's over the years, actually called them today on a sight.

Not familiar with Ken, may have to stop by. Thanks for the heads up.
