"B Team" as in Backup Rifle. The scope on my goto rifle, a Ruger 77 MKII, went out on me a couple of weeks back. So Monday I hunted with one of my spares. Its an NEF Handi-Rifle in .243 Win. It started out life as a youth model, but my kids outgrew it, so I bought a used adult butt stock for it. It makes for a light handy little package. About 11:15 a group of does came by with the buck chasing them. I didn't have time to line up a shot, but they made a 180 and came back by my stand. The buck stopped for a moment about 100 yards away, and I took the shot. He stopped, turned, took one step, and collapsed. The bullet entered just behind the left shoulder and angled forward. You can see the entrance hole in the hide at the bottom of the picture. The bullet stopped just under the hide just in front of the right shoulder. The ammo was Hornady Custom brand with the 100 grain Interlock boattail. The recovered bullet weighed 72 grains. Below are some pictures of his left hind quarter where a bullet clipped the joint. The bullet went through and through and broke the joint pretty badly. No, but I did think it was strange that he let the does run off and leave him behind so easily. I wonder too if he would have been able to mount one of them if he had caught up to them.

You did good. That's a real nice bama eight.

Its only the second deer I've taken with the .243. My Ruger is chambered for 30'06, and I've taken quite a few with a 44 Mag revolver. The .243 did the job okay, but it seems strange to find such a small piece of lead left over.

Now if only McMillan would make an EDGE for NEFs. That is a great Southeastern deer, much better than my two runts this year. I've twice killed deer that had been wounded by poor shots: 1. About 10 years ago a doe had a healing, perfectly round 12 ga. hole in her neck and no slug present, 2. About 5 years ago a buck with a fresh and horrendous wound across the top of his back that had actually torn the "flange" at the top of one vertabrae; guarantee it had dropped at the yanked shot and then jumped up an run off when yon Goober was halfway out of the tree. Got pics of that second buck's wound in my old computer. If I get that rascal hooked up this week I will try to post it. That could be another sticky thread: "Show us the Game You've Had to Finish Off that Someone Else Wounded."

The little Handi-Rifle is fun. Its so light and short that it feels like your carrying around a Daisy BB gun. The adult stock on the youth model makes it butt heavy (but aren't we all after a certain age). So it is a little harder to hold steady.
