Hi, I just purchased a used Marlin in new condition and I haven't seen any others like it. It has a straight grip with a beautiful dark walnut stock. 20" barrel, full mag, no hammer block safety, and saddle ring on the left side, d&t for scope, chambered in 30-30. Was this a special run and what is the value going by my description? What was the first year of the infamous hammerblock safety that everyone seems to complain about? I have owned Marlins before, but, just for trading fodder. This is the first one that I bought to keep. I haven't shot it , yet. Maybe next week if the weather gets better. Thanks, Roger.

Sounds like a Texan. If you wouldn't mind posting the letter prefix to the serial # or the 1st 2 digits, I or one of the other members can give you a little more information. SW

Based on your description and a quick review of Murray's book, pages 2-16 and 2-17, it is a 336-T "Texan". The saddle ring was added in 1965 and discontinued after 1971. Prior to 1971, the rear of the lever was rounded and after 1970 the rear of the lever was squared. The serial number prefix codes from 1965 through 1968 are AA, AB, AC, and AD. From 1969 through 1972, the last 2 digits of the year became the prefix, 69 through 72. Beginning in 1973, the first 2 digits of the serial number started with 27 and decreased by 1 for each successive year.

Does that help?

Wow, thanks guys, that's exactly what I was looking for. Apparently, it was made in 1972. Ser # 72058xxx. I haven't got around to shooting it, yet. We've been having floods here in South Texas. I did mount a new Weaver 2.5x with low rings. It looks really nice with this setup. Thanks again, Rojelio
