I have a stainless Winchester model 70 odd6. What would it take to turn this rifle into a 300 win mag? ballpark cost?

Redneck, if you happen to see this give me some kind of contact info. I sent a p.m. the other day but no response. Ken.

Well, if yours has a 24 inch or longer (Preferably 26) barrel you could have the bolt face and feed rails opened up a touch and then re chambered to 300WinMag. If a 22 inch bbl, more common for a 30/06, then it would be best to re-barrel. Best idea for favorable and much less expensive results is to simply trade your rifle in on a model 70 in 300 WinMag or sell yours and use the money towards buying one.

I'd say punch the 06 AI or sell the 30-06 and buy a 300win mag if you are looking for a little extra speed. YMMV..

The 30/06 is a Long Action...300 W.M. is a Magnum action. It will not convert. I would suggest selling your 30/06 and buying a 300 W.M. if that's what you want....probably could trade for it as well.

DONT DO IT. Would have to open up bolt face. Substantial increase in recoil. Negligible gains in velocity (especially in a 22 or 24" barrel). Punch it AI or leave it alone.

If you must have a magnum, sell yours and buy one

Yes it will convert.

Tha SAAMI maximum cartridge length for both the 30-06 and the 300WM is 3.340".

Like Safariman said you'd have to open up the boltface from .473 to .532, modify the extractor, alter the feed rails, and rebarrel or rechamber.

If the rifle has sentimental value then it can be done for a price but if you merely want a 300WM then buy one.

The 06 has a 24 inch barrel. Here is the problem, finding a left hand 300 win mag stainless.

Here is your challenge guys. Tell me how i can end up with a 300 win mag, lefty, stainless preferred, definite no shiny gloss.
I would have no problem buying a action and barrel and dropping that into a mcmillian hunter stock. The 06 has that stock and I really like it. Cost is a factor, lets start with 1200 for the rifle.

i know I can find a Remington 7oo SPS lefty 300 but I dont care for that matte finish my SPS 12 gauge has. I'm assuming their the same matte finish. I dont care for the sps stock either.

Finding lefty bolts just plain bites. What say you? Ken

I feel your pain, being left handed as well.

The 700 has a ton of aftermarket support. Several places sell complete bolt bodies and any GOOD 'smith could alter your feed rails, fit the new bolt (or modify the old one), and rebarrel using a good SS barrel. While you have the barrel off you can get a new, thick recoil lug installed, massage the trigger, and generally smooth things up.
For a purely hunting rifle I tend to agree with JB that blueprinting the action is seldom necessary.

I'm not a commercial 'smith so I don't know about pricing but Brownells shop price survey says $150-250 to fit a new barrel plus cost of barrel, feed rails should be $100-150 possibly less, fitting new bolt <$100.

All told $500-700 I'd guess.

I too would like to hear from a real 'smith.

Here are some prices I got from ER Shaw.

SS barrel in Remington contour $240

Fit and testfire barrel $75

Alter action for std. magnum $65

Shipping & handling $30

ER Shaw doesn't make the finest barrels out there but they are more than adequate for hunting. I've been happy with mine.

I have a LH 300 Win M 70, but it is blued. If we could negotiate a trade, you could get it coated for a stainless or matte blued look.

If you convert your '06, you are looking at rechamber, modify boltface, new extractor, new mag box, maybe new follower, and modify feed rails. But that is assuming you are using the current barrel.

Are you talking a new action and barrel for a new stock,or converting my winnie 06. It seems like it would make more sense to just build a new rifle. I'm starting to lean that way. Their is nothing wrong with the 06, I would just like a 300. Ken

Go buy the SPS stainless. Take it to your smith and have him beadblast it and put a good crown on it while it is there. I did that and the new finish is the nicest stainless finish I own.

Sell your 30-06, buy a lefty action, screw on a stainless tube, have the whole thing coated, drop into a Mc Hunter, all for pretty near 1,200 bucks....maybe a couple more but not much.

Probably get a better result also.

Good luck with your choice!

I'd do the trade with utah708 provided it is CRF for CRF and have it Cerakoted first...have him pony a little extra since yours is SS and his is blued. Then go get a McMillan for it.

Heck I wouldn't even punch it to AI I would leave it alone and buy a 300 win mag. A 30-06 pushing a 165 partition will get it done.

I'm talking your present action with barrel removed, shipped to Shaw and rebarreled and modified to magnum.
You keep present stock.

Shaw does not convert comercial actions from standard to magnums just millitary and a few controlled round feeds.

A model 70 IS a CRF..... sigh..... Now knowing that you are a lefty, That you are one of the fortunate few owners of a LH CRF rifle and that the rifle has a 24 inch bbl, I now retract my earlier statement and agree that a re-bore would be a great idea OR do the trade with Utah and then either cerakote or, as I have done with my SS guns as well as a few others a do it yourself flat black Brownells Moly-Teflon Bake on finish is easy to do and gives a great result.

I have a couple of CRF rifles (Model 70, Mauser and 1917 enfield) that started life as 30/06's and are now short or long magnums. All are terrific rifles to say the least.
