Anyone have one of these? I just picked one up for a very reasonable price. It comes with a 221 Fireball barrel and the laminated stock. I am planning to get a 257 Roberts AI barrel for it. Would appreciate any feedback on either the pistol of rhe 257 AI. Plan to use this for varmits (coyotes, groundhogs, etc) and possibly antelope.
Stush

My brother had one a few yrs ago chambered in 250 Savage and .357 Maximum. Quite accurate and comfortable to shoot. I'm currently contemplating the purchase of one myself. (.357 Max & ? - perhaps .45LC)

I actually have the Competitor in my posession now, but have not had a chance to shoot it. It came, as mentioned above, with a 221 Fireball barrel. I am not planning to use this barrel initially. I have a 16" 257 AI barrel on order from Competitor Corp. It should be here next week. The scope, ammo, chronograph, etc. are all here waiting for it to arrive. I will post back after I have had a chance to put it through its paces.
I am very impressed by the construction of the gun. Very tight - nice solid lockup. Not exactly pretty by conventional standards. It sort of epitomizes the old "form follows function" adage, but it feels very good in the hand. The nice thing about the design of the Competitor is that the gun with a 14" barrel is no longer than a Contender with a 10" barrel on it. Not that I plan to throw my Contenders out anytime soon, but it is nice to have the extra barrel length in such a compact package.
More to follow...

------------------
Stush

I've had the Competitor's competition, the Lone Eagle, with a 223 and 308 barreled actions once. Nice handguns. This one was one of the older squarish stock. I filled the hollow synthetic stock with epoxy, and inserted a swivel post in it, and a barrel band on the front(actually, it was a hose clamp, but who cares, it worked).
I couldn't find a good load for the 223, but the 308 was accurate enough to hit what I was aiming at.
I once read the Competitor has more barrel offerings then the Lone Eagle, which would be an advantage, if one wanted many chamberings. ~~~Suluuq

Suluug,
You can't imagine how many different chambering that this thing comes in. Everything from the 17 calibers up the 458. You have to consider that the 257 AI barrel that I ordered is a "standard" caliber. The price can't be beat. The extra barrels cost less than Contender barrels. As a matter of fact, I got a barrel, extractor, and a set of custom dies for less than what new Contender barrel would cost.
The Competitor, IMHO, offers three distinct advantages over the Lone Eagle:
1) It cocks on opening. No awkward cocking lever on the left side of the gun.
2) The stocks are nicer. They come in walnut, laminate, and fiberglass. I have the laminate, and while it doesn't have the nicest lines that I have ever seen, it sure feels good in your hand. Plus, it feels nice and solid compared to the Lone Eagle.
3) You use the same action for all calibers. This is why the replacement barrels are so cheap compared to the Lone Eagle.
I am anxiously waiting for my new barrel to arrive. I can't wait to give a test run. I plan to post a review with photos, etc. when I'm done.
------------------
Stush

Stush
I'm knew to this board however I'm not new to competitors.I've had competitors for about 11 years now. It's one of those things If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It.One of my most accurate handguns is a 25 super it will shoot 1/4" at 200 with 100 gr balistic tips.I think I have had around 21 or 22 calibers so far and never been dissapointed with any of them. You are doing just fine going with the funny looking ray gun.
Short Barrels L-----o-----n-----g Range
