UPDATE - I called as I know the guy, and he said the only thing he could find in his book listed it as a "Texican?" I ca get w/Weaver for under $400 OTD - this a good buy?

I was at the shop yesterday and I noted an unusual Marlin 336, can I get some info on it? It was straight-gripped, no button safety, and had an 18 1/2" barrel. I remember something about a model referred to as a Marauder - could this be one of those guns? I do not recall that marking being on it, but would like to know if they were marked in that manner. I worked for a gunsmith for quite a few years and was able to tell that this is not a custom conversion, but just what the heck is it???

It's a Marauder!

Hmmmm.......wonder if I can get there before the shop closes?

ARE MARAUDERS ALWAYS MARKED AS SUCH, AND WHERE WOULD THEY BE SO-MARKED?

Not a Maurader. The picture above is a 336 TK. They were a special run made for K-mart only during the 80's. It has a hardwood stock with half mag and 18.5" barrel. Nor sure of the value, but a lot of people like them because the shorter barrel and half tube make them balance well.

Mauraders were made in the 60's. The lever will be rounded vs square. They have walnut stocks with 16.25" barrels and full mag tubes.

Marlin did make a few Texan models with walnut stocks and straight grips. Most have 20" barrels, but they did offer them with 18.5" barrels for at least one year. I have 5 with 20" barrels, and had one of the 18" barrels years ago and like a fool sold it.

For a Texan I would consider $350 to be about as high as I would go unless it was in near perfect condition.

Check the SN and run it through www.armscollectors.com to find the DOM. If made in the 60's and fits the decription above it may be a Maurader. If made in the 70's or early 80's it is probably a Texan. Check for rounded vs square levers as well. Make sure of barrel length.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

From 1980-1983 the texans were 18.5" barrels and no CBS straight grip full magazine. I expect you will see one of these. The Mauraders were 16" barrels. You will be getting a TS without the safety. You are gona love that gun if you can get it. They are very accurate. Good luck!

My dad has a Texan. It is by far my favorite .30-30 lever gun.
