I just shot my mountie for the first time. It shoots well but I was surprised that the firing pin is loose in the action. You can push it in while the rifle is cocked and it does not resist. I found this strange and I assume some spring or part is in wrong or missing. Any ideas???

I believe that is how it is supposed to be. I could be wrong, but my 39A and 39M are both that way. There is no spring on it.

thanks. it seemed kind of weird. i assumed i would be able to let the hammer down slowly and put it on safe. then cock it and shoot. it definitely does not work this way.

Hi Guys
That's how the firing pin is meant to be ( No Spring ), there is no safety but just an intermediate position for the hammer to be placed in making it difficult to squeeze the trigger, when the action is stripped the pin can readily fall out so be careful not to loose it.
When you have cleaned your rifle and come to put it back together do not over tighten the large action screw, I use a coin and tighten till the action works as required by me if you over tighten it will make the action and lever too stiff when operated.

Forgot to say when you put the action block back on the slide, which only fits in one position and pushes forward to lock in place, with the firing pin in place , always put some good quality fine grade machine oil on the pin and action block and slide , don't over do it .

I have had one of these rifles for over 35 years and it still shoots as good as new and shoots very good groups, clean with hoppe's bench rest and mop dry , lightly oil and every so often clean all the action, it shoots perfect every time , only thing that has ever gone wrong was the ejector claw spring broke , soon changed it and it was as good as new.

I currently have two 39A models and the shorter which I think is the 39M or is it 39D ?

Steve
