Resonable???
Unless you are going to hobble them, and wait till the ideal shot presents itself, and foregoing all non-perfect angles, and passing up on some nice bulls, the speed of light 80 grain gopher bullet is not an elk load I would select. I've carried out too many elk that made it into the deep, dark, steep north slopes when my partners couldn't control the fever.
No, I only hunt with those guys once. I'm just not a friggin pack mule.
Just gotta rant, cause someone thinks they got another angel dancing on the pin, and it's all illusion anyhow.

If he's gonna shoot an elk with an 80g TSX out of a 257 Roy, I would shoot an elk with a 62g GS Custom out of a 240 Roy. SDs are similar (0.173 for TSX, 0.150 for GSC), 62g more velocity, I prefer the GS Custom construction. I can vouch for GSC bullets, I shot a 40g(another gopher bullet) through the shoulder of a whitetail buck at 30 yards at 3800 fps (SD 0.114). Just saying.... Hole through the vitals is a hole through the vitals - not rocket science. Not saying either is ideal- but how do you define ideal? 130g GS Custom (SD 0.196) from a 300WM isnt ideal either, but I guess it worked alright here. (Sorry didnt find any 125NBT references, I thought this was close enough). http://www.gsgroup.co.za/allen.html

30/378 with 125 NBT at 3835fps (Nosler max) is 5.9 inches down at 300 yards from a 100 yard zero.
240 Weatherby Mag with 62g GS Customs HV bullets at 4100 fps is 4.6 inches down at 300 yards with 100 yard zero.
Appreciate the numbers KY. A bunch of what has been mentioned is just generalities. Those options you mentioned are stretched string tight. Let's see some more drop numbers from your favorite loads that you consider to be exceptionally flat shooting folks. Reference them from a 100 yard zero so were all on the same sheet of music. John

Addressing the original post, a .257 Weatherby with a 80gr TTSX launched at 3850 drops 6.1" at 300 yards from a 100 yard zero. The 100gr TTSX launched at 3600 drops 6.8". If someone could show me a cartridge reasonable for everything up to Elk that shoots flatter than that inside 300, I'd be very interested...
John my vote for elk 6.5x300weatherby 140sst @3500 2.2 down @ 300 with 100yd zero..

Flat shooting it is.Only requires 3.25 of up to be on at 400 yards from a 100 yard zero.Thats pretty flat So that would be about 13" down at 400. That is pretty dang flat. About 2" flatter than my 80gr TTSX load from the .257 Wby., and 3" flatter than the 100gr TTSX. Very impressive. John

+1 I've chased too many wounded moose and elk while guiding that have been shot with sub-.308 calibers over the years. I won't even hunt with people that use any less. Sounds like the people you hunt with cannot shoot very well.

Sounds like the people you hunt with cannot shoot very well. They shoot well but miss the vitals, due to deflections or the critter wasn't just standing quite right, or the sun got in my eye. The flippen reason is a box of bullets lasts them 5 years to shoot.
It is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.
