Greetings, I've got an old Rem. ..22cs that I would like to convert to .22 Magnum. It seems the major difference in the two is the case length. The Mag is 1.35 long and the CS is 1.17 long. Do you think is would be possible for me to ream out the chamber that small amount. Thanks for your opinions.

I think that CCI still makes 22 WRF ammo, which is the same as the 22 Remington Special, and might be a better solution. I don't think that the 22 MRF ammo will feed in the 12 CS, but I've never tried it and don't know for certain.

The WMR is loaded much hotter than the old WRF, I don't think the gun would hold up, it certainly would not be something I would consider safe. CCI still makes WRF hollow points and Winchester has been doing special runs of and on, I think the last was about 5 years ago - I bought some locally then for less than $5 a box - I still see the Winchester WRF at shows for about $10 a box.

That is NOT the major difference.

The major difference is that the mag is loaded to MUCH higher pressures, and doesn't use the softer pure lead bullet the Special does.

The reason the mag is longer is to deter loading the more poweful cartridge in the smaller/weaker chambered gun.

Sure, it's "possible" to rechamber the CS to mag - but it's a recipe for disaster.

If you'd like to have a .22mag, sell the CS - it should bring enough $$$ to buy 2 or 3 .22 mag rifles.

Remington 12s are very similar to the Remington 25s that were made in 25-20 and 32-20, so I really think that pressure would be less of an issue then the ability, or inability, of the longer 22 MRF cartridge to feed through the action.

Tubular magazines are pretty cartridge specific, which may be why nobody converts Remington 582s to 17 HM2 or Marlin 983s to 17 HMR.
