I think we often give deer too much "credit" for intelligence. In my experience, deer are NOT as "smart" as they are simply "cautious"... just like any prey-species.
I find they are also very "curious" animals. When NOT frightened or startled into instant flight, I've watched calm deer that I decided NOT to shoot show a great deal of "curiosity" about slight sounds or small movements I'd make in "testing" a deer's "fight or flight syndrome" reactions.
As several other hunters have reported here in various forums in the 24-Hour Campfire.com, deer have often been known to show considerable curiousity by coming to hunters using predator calls... and not necessarily just those calls that imitated bleating deer fawns, but distress calls imitating rabbits and other animals as well.
More years ago than I care to admit, I had a grizzled old hunter tell me that he got his annual antelope by placing a 5-foot stake in the ground at the top of a hill with a bit of white cloth tacked to the top of the stake. The piece of cloth waved and fluttered in the breeze and antelope came to the stake out of curiousity to see what the fluttering white cloth was... thus offering the old hunter a "clean" shot at them as they stood there "nosing" the fluttering cloth... due to their curiousity. I believe that undisturbed deer will do very much the same thing.
