Alright folks, i have posted a couple threads here about various 22 lr bolt actions. i think the fastest way to get a good answer is gonna be to ask the question i really do want answered. what is the BEST (most accurate, most reliable) bolt action 22 LR for $400 OR LESS? i have looked at CZ 452 trainer/american, Savage MKII, Marlin, etc. the savage i looked at, was the heavy barreled variety with accutrigger and etc, comes as a package gun with a cheap-ish scope already mounted, so far seems to be the best value i guess. anyway, accuracy is the primary concern, second concern is function (by that i mean reliability) and who could argue with a nice looking rifle?

CZ is a great bolt gun- the accuracy is well-known. I wouldn't hesitate on buying one, and for the price range you mentioned, it's a best bet.
Believe it or not, I have one of those "rarity" bolt-action .22's, it's an old Marlin 80 I inherited from gramps, and it will shoot with an any mid to high grade .22 made. Not saying they're all like that, this one is just special. Every once in a while a gun comes around with one of those perfect barrels, I guess.
It's left a lot of folks that have shot it at the club shaking their head.....

CZ all the way with the criteria you are looking for. Although I love my Winchester 52 !! It was $375.00 when I got it about 15 years ago. There were a few rifles that came through the shop just like levrluvr describes. One was a MAS .22 that was a true one holer at 50 yards. I had a mauser WWII .22 trainer that was very accurate as well. Others in no particular order were: Remington 540/541, Remington 581, BRNO models 1,2,3,4, Winchester 75's. We used to host .22 benchrest matches at the shop in South Carolina so we saw some pretty interesting good shooting rifles.

My CZ American has done 3/8" groups with Federal Bulk ammo, 1/2" is closer to common with the same ammo. That's without having done anything to it, haven't shot it since I lighted the trigger.

Haven't even tried any of the good stuff in it either.

I like Rugers, have seven of them in different configurations (center fire & rimfire) but not many of them will do a 1/2" at 100 yards out of the box, not many rifles in general will do that much less one costing under 400.00 bucks.

A Winchester 75 is a real accurate rifle and you can find them for that amount now and then.

First time out with it, was sighting it in and wasn't even trying for any special groups. Than I started paying attention and tried after I noticed these tiny little clusters as I was adjusting the scope (VX-II 3-9 standard paralax). Best group was 3/8", shooting with a bullsbag off of a truck hood no less.

Went back out a few days later and repeated the same initial results.

Think it's a keeper smile

I love my 453 American with the 4-12x40. One hole groups out to 50 yards so far.

More than one 452 that shoots bug holes at 100y with Federal black/red box ammo. CZ makes good rifles.

No offense, but people don't read very well.

Someone mentioned a WINCHESTER 52, not a CZ 452

Original post specified 400.00 or under and there's not many Winchester Repos, much less originals that can be had for 400 bucks. Going rate is about twice that and up anymore.
