BTW, if you let a pup get too close to these things when you spring them, if they are a bit soft, you can wind up with a bird shy dog. And your 5 year old daughter can throw a bumper farther than these things.

YES!!!........I found that out the hard way years ago. I thought I would never get that young female to keep from shying away from a bird that we would release in a manual launcher. I think those electric one's are even more likely to put a young dog in the gun shy state.

Hi Tonk. I figure I've made all the mistakes you can in my 30 yrs of dog training. These are OK tools, so long as you know what you're doing. If you're a novice, its best to leave them alone. I have several, but I haven't used them in years. There're worse things than letting a dog catch a bird.

Anyway, I sorta figure if you're advertising on Craigslist, then coming here, you're a d**k and have no idea what you're doing. Other, than, maybe, trying to make money off the unsuspecting or unknowing. . .

Yep, I would rather see my dogs catch a bird now and then as to become totally spooky in the field over those launchers.

We simply put out birds for our young dogs and I usually mark the area within 10 yards with a golf flag, just in case I get turned around (sometimes it happens) in a big field. Now sometimes a smart dog will figure out those flags and run straight for the flag, knowing he is close to a bird. Other times I have seen them pick up the tracks of the ATV and follow it for awhile this is why I also tell the boys to run figure eights and NOT just drop off a bird in a straight line set out, be random and mix things up. You take care!

I've shot enough NSTRA to know that dogs will follow ATV's. They'll listen for birds to call too. Some guys will train their dogs to do this. After a point, its no longer about how well a dog hunts. Its about winning regardless of how well your dog might do in the field. This is another reason I gave it up.

I will say old time Michigan grouse trials work reasonably well. There is a meaning to a "one good find".

Manual traps work best with done dogs working on a problem. I've used re-mote traps with pups for years, but, you better know what your doing to avoid hitting the pup with it. A truely wonderful tool that can turn into a nightmare.

As for training your dog to listen for birds, I used to give a bob white whistle in training just befor a dog would hit a bird. If I wanted to pull a dog back to some certain spot durning a trial I'd give the whistle.

As for following ATV's and plkanter's foot scent, I don't care if they do. The excersise is to handle the bird right however it is found. Of course a dog that only knows how to follow off scent could be a problem to get hunting. A lot of guy's use carded pigeons to eliminate that problem, I don't do it. Nothing worse than seeing a pigeon hanging upside down from a card on a phone wire!
