Can I use a Remington trigger guard? Has anyone bought a McMillan inletted like this? I figure I could save some weight and money like this, and it's tougher to boot. Opinions?

Winchester made an ADL version of the Model 70 and trigger guards are available for it. I think Williams makes one, and factory take-off parts are around.

Mine is a WSM. That is a sweet deal though. I'm looking for stainless, should have mentioned that.

You can use a 670/blind mag trigger guard. Williams has a nice 670 guard, but it is a pretty heavy piece...nice and solid, but heavier than the alloy factory trigger guard. McMillian will inlet for it...it is the same size/shape/inletting as a factory 670 trigger guard.

The mag boxes in the 670 was set up for a blind mag rifle that is push feed. There is a difference in the mag box at the top that may interfer with bolt travel and feeding if it is a CRF rifle...keep that in mind. The easiest thing to do is grind down bottom of the mag box that you currently have. It will need a fair amount taken off the bottom. Not a hard job or complicated....you just don't want to leave it so long that it will cause uneven pressure when you tighten the action screws.

I prefer blind mag and I've done a couple M70's this way.

..it strikes me as a bad idea.I am no fan of blind magazines in a BG rifle that sees serious use, for the trivial benefit it confers in less weight.The ability to clear a jam, or remove debris from the magazine well is worth the insignificant savings in weight..This is a modification that can "bite" at the wrong time.JMHO and YMMV.

I would save the weight,and the money,somewhere else.

JCM nailed it. Its pretty easy to do but finding the mag box is tough. Its way easier to grind down your current one. You will probably have to trim the front action screw as well. Well I did anyway. The Williams TG is about the best I found. Its a bit on the heavy side but it is really nice. The super shadows came with a alloy TG I think. You can get that one from winchester.

On the blind VS. hinged argument it kinda goes both ways. You could have a hinged bottom metal failure just as easy as getting something stuck in your blind mag. I cant see how one excels over the other but to each their own.

I prefer a blind mag for a number of reasons.

No accidental opening, lighter, stronger stock, less expensive.

Guess that's why they make both types.

I am kind of surprised at the blind magazine argument as well I hunted with one in a Winchester for 30 years and never had a problem?

And how did you ever survive carrying those extra ounces of metal up and down all those hills? My take on the blind magazine question is that it's neither here nor there, just a matter of preference. I prefer a floorplate, but one that is kept shut with a tough spring, or, better yet, the old Mauser system requiring a bullet tip to operate the latch.

Bullet tip wouldn't be a good option for this, it's going to be a 458 B&M. Think .458 WSM. No tip!

Mainly I wanted to avoid paying a hefty fee for stainless bottom metal to match. The cheapest I know of is still very expensive--Sunny Hill.

Another option is to leave your current rifle alone, and purchase a M70 Winlite. I just happen to have one for sale (shameless plug).
