Ever fish the dry fly version? There are a couple lakes here that hold some big rainbows interested in the adult.

AKGrayling: Dry fly version... Yes. Tied up some bundled deer hair for the extended tails, and they worked quite well. I have seen trout jumping out of the water and taking them as they land on rush stems etc that were a few inches above the water surface. A great June pattern in our eastern Oregon still waters. Not so much though on our streams and rivers.

Yeah, I have only had luck with them on lakes too. For a tail I use this braided stuff, blue with black bands. I think its mono braid but I got it at some fly shop in town.
