<BR>OK, I`ve got a squirrel on one side of the tree and I`m on the otherside. What do you do. Also do squirrel calls work?

Couple of tricks that might work, carry a long string, tie it to a limb of a smaller tree or a branch on another tree, back off and pull, shaking the limb. The squirrel will usually move enough for you to get a shot. Or you can pussyfoot around and hope he gives you a half a head shot. Or you can pick up a big chunk off the ground and throw it, watching for the squirrel to move. If none of the above work, admit that the squirrel is smarter than you are and go on to a dumber one. Then come back in about 15 minutes and he will usually be moving again, depending on time of day.<P>Squirrel calls are kind of like duck calls, a lot depends on the caller. I've had some success with the "squeal/whistle" type but I usually just prefer to still hunt and hope to see them first.

I usually back off from the tree about 15 yards or so and sit down and wait. The squirrel will usuall start moving again in 20 minutes or so if you sit still and are quiet. I've tried the throwin rocks and putting my hat on a stick on sticking it around the tree but that never worked for me. Sitting down works most of the time but not always.

Ive never had much luck with a squirrel call myself.<P>As for your other question, I cant add anything the other guys havent already said. I just try throwing the stick. But I make it a BIG stick. Lightly throw a little rock so it lands on the other side of the tree. Often he will come around.

"Cracker balls" left over from the 4th of July, fired from a slingshot, at another tree on the squirrel's side of the world. Haven't done this in the last 37 years ... it's just not fair.

The less you do the better. Back off about 25 yards and sit against another tree. Watch any forks the tree may have for the squirrel`s head to appear. Many times the squirrel will move up to the fork and take a peek to see if he/she can spot the danger. The more movement you put on the squirrel, the longer it will take for him/her to calm down. Yes, calls will work sometimes; especially near a feed tree and hollow.(den tree) Keep the volumn low. I'll second Broken's reply. I LOVE squirrel huntin. Found over years of huntin them little gray ghosts just back off find a tree ta sit against relax (with eyes open). Usually a shot will present. As for calls use em still huntin an occasion will get a response or movement reaction which means fried squirrel.

I just sit down and wait. If your quiet and dont move, the critter will start moving again. It has worked every time for me. I have used a bark call with some success. I will bark a few times and then rustle the leaves on the ground. After a while, ole Sammy squirrel cant stand it and will poke his skeevy little head out to see what all the commotion is. I love hunting these little tree rats. The more I hunt them, the more I respect them and I always get a laugh at some of the antics they pull.<BR>Keeb

I have agree with some of the other post's. Just back off and sit down be quiet and wait. the squirrel will show himself in a few minutes. Besides that's one of the main things I like about squirrel hunting, it's done at a slow pace and anytime you can spend quality time in the woods is time well spent. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sometimes the best way is to close your eyes, hard to sleep with 'em open.

Had some climb down the tree I was leaning against to see what the noise was all about. Stealth Mode, fools 'em every time.

be still and wait him out,or take yer hat and toss it to the side hes on.this has worked for me.
