I don't know, but I heard they get tremendous discounts on ink and Bic pens sponsors a few of the bigger names.

What does "trading guns" mean? Or for that matter, "wealthiest?"
Both of your assumptions seem to be fallacious.

. I assume it was Clay Harvey. Whether you should emulate him is another story.

Do a search. You'll figure it out.

I think the honor of making the most money trading guns goes to me. I am only down by about $3500. All the other writers have lost more than that.

Wasn't there a joke about that? Something about turning a matched pair of Purdeys into a Savage with a Simmons scope in three trades. I might have some of the details wrong.

It is not an Aussie. There has never been a full time gun writer there so I guess no-one is wealthy. (At least from writing)

People sometimes have peculiar ideas about the lives of gunwriters.
There are a few people who can make a living at it, but those are darn few.
Most of us write about something that interests us, and do a few articles a year, each of which pays a few hundred dollars. Per hour, it probably works out to less than $10. It might pay for the equipment for the next round of work, but that's about it.
If you do get a firearm, it's not a gift. You get to use it for a time, and sometimes you get a chance to buy it for a modest discount. I've personally never done that (since I don't review firearms) and I've always bought all my own reloading components.
So the truth is that the job doesn't pay very well, and in many cases it doesn't produce much in the way of freebies. But there is the glamor aspect of it....

Boy, that sums it up just about to perfection. Not that any non-writer will believe it, of course.

Rocky, I seem to remember just yesterday offering to make you rich (Lipsey). That you refused was no fault of mine.

Shoot (no pun intended), I thought with all the free hunts, free gear, free guns, boondoggles paid for by mfgrs, etc.....the gun writers had no expenses.
Plus, the tons of money coming in off of endorsements, video sales, TV appearances, writing fees etc.....
They don't have to sell/trade guns right ? (btw no pun intended, right ?)
Heck, I even recon they are even PO'd over the tax rates going up for people who make over $250k/year..........
WTF is up with this thread ?????

During the mid 80's to mid 90's, I wrote more articles on Weatherby rifles than possibly all gun writers combined world wide, at least very considerably more than I ever saw or noted. When I approached the Weatherby Distributor for one (1) box of factory ammo to try in the new .416 Weatherby, I was told, "Geeze John, that stuff is pretty expensive" and was refused. To this day, I have never shot a Weatherby factory round I did not buy myself and yet what is the value of the 3-5 page editorials I have published considering I have used nearly all Weatherby cartridges. Nope, We get ZIP! If a distributor likes you, you have a chance at something here and there as I have also found, mostly a few boxes of bullets and some powder and yes, the US is far more generous that the land of OZ where business has always been "conservative". Is that a negative comment? Up to the reader I guess.
