I've got a Marlin 1895 XLR in 45-70 with the barrel cut back to 17"

For me, this gun points very well with the pistol grip, and is very fast on target for brush hunting.

That being said, I've also got a 39 Mountie with the straight grip that works well for me.

I like 'em BOTH!

I prefer the pistol-grip variants. I cut my teeth on an old Winchester .32 with a strait grip and had no issues. The pistol grip simply feels "right".

I'm looking to get into a lever in 45 Colt, however, and don't see any with a pistol grip. I guess I'll have to suffer smile .

I like the straight grip and square lever!
