Back in the '80's I got addicted to Thompson Center Contenders and had a carbine barrel made in 45-70. I read everything I could get my hands on in terms of reloading data and bullet suggestions. JD Jones of SSK Industries was a big proponent of the Speer 400 gr in his Hand Cannons. He was shooting elephants with this bullet if memory serves. I shot an elk with one. If you wanna kill something that walks on planet earth, a .458 Speer 400 grain will kill it out of a 45-70. There may be even better choices now but this one will work.

IIRC - With the Speer 400s I stopped at 45 gr of IMR4198. Think it was supposed to be ~1,900 fps.

I know it gave me eyeball floaters...

Accurate as all get out, but you wanted to not forget your lead sled at the range...

That being said, I have Win factory 300 HPs packed for deer cap this year.
