Hi all. I have a set of Talley Lightweights and a Zeiss 3-9X40 Conquest to mount on my M70 '.06. Does anyone know the torque specs for the base and ring screws? The Talley packaging doesn't have any instructions or torque specs...I do have the Wheeler torque wrench. Do I need to call Talley?

Talley light-weight allow scope mounts
(specs not listen online, I called, he said it was OK to post these, call to verify if you wish)
base to receiver:20-25in/lbs
ring halves:15-20in/lbs

I use 20 in/lb on the rings and 25-30 on the bases.
Nothing slips even in a .300 Nula that is less then 7lb with a 4X14 Leupie. No ring marks either.

Do you all put anything inside of the rings to help them grip the scope?

Lap the rings and you won't have any slippage.

When I called him up and asked torque specs, he told me 25 inch pounds on the base, and 17 on the caps.

I've got a set of these rings coming along with one of the Wheeler torque wrenches.

I was hoping that these would not need to be lapped.

I'll evaluate them and see....do not want ring marks if I can help it.

I should be mounting a set of these in a couple of days. Good to know.

I use the little allen wrench that they provide with the rings and tighten them as best I can. I think you can overanalyze it, use the manufacturer provided tool which prevents you from being somewhat ham handed about it.

I have the same type light weight rings for my Weatherby Mark V
should I Loc Tite the base screws to the gun?

I did use the torque wrench and went to 18inlbs which is what the Talley rep told me to go to on the rings.

I was amazed at how much lighter this was than I've gone in the past just using the supplied wrenches.

I've been bearing down on scopes way too much over the years.

In this rare case, I'm glad I did "over-analyse" it and buy the wrench. I've got three others to mount soon. It's nice to know that they'll be done right with no slippage and no damage to the scope.

I use the supplied wrenches, and go until I can't turn the small handle by hand. Probably should check that, but I figure it is less than I could do with the long end of the handle.

I'm definitely not over analyzing it.

I too was curious about this. I got a great deal on one of the torque wrenches and bought it to check it out. Gary at Talley confirmed 18 in/lbs for the rings. I set it there and was surprised by how much lighter they were compared to cranking them by hand. Will be interesting to see if the scopes ever come loose.

I know for a fact that I can pop the screw heads off with those little wrenches they suplied. I did it with a set of Leupold mounts one time.

I'm heavy handed and was ignorant at that time how such things should be handled. I've probably damaged a scope or two over the years due to this ignorance.

The Wheeler F.A.T. wrench seemed like a great idea. I should have spent the $40 years ago.

Dub, two thumbs up on the Wheeler FAT torque wrench. That one tool has saved me a LOT of money and aggravation.
